RACING CREDENTIALS OF DERBY STARTERS Herewith Is a brief summary of what the prospective contestants in the sixtieth Ken ¬ tucky Derby have accomplished in racing to date dateBAZAAR BAZAAR BAZAAROne One of the oustanding juveniles of 1933 This wellbred daughter of Tetratema Sil ¬ ver Hue raced with distinction and success among the best of her age with five vic ¬ tories out of ten starts to her credit She finished second once and third in another being unplaced in only three races Her most valuable and greatest triumph was in the Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga in which she met and defeated in easy fashion such notables of the juvenile division as High Quest Discovery Red Wagon Singing Wood Spy Hill First Minstrel Roustabout Observant Black Buddy Hadagal National Anthem Sir Thomas and Stand Pat Here were the elite of the twoyearold crop of the year with thi exception of Mata Hari Far Star and one 3r two others and Bazaar simply ran away from her rivals to earn the princely sum of 33500 one of the largest turf prizes of the year Bazaar also won the Albany Handicap at Saratoga and the Spalding Lowe Jenkins Handicap at Laurel Park besides being second in the Matron Stakes at Belmont Park and third in the Selima Stakes at Laurel In the Spalding Lowe Jenkins Handicap she ran a mile in 138 to trim Cavalcade Chicstraw Vicar and three others certainly a fine per ¬ formance though she was doing her best at the end She has not entered competition as a threeyearold but has turned in the best work over the Derby distance but one covering the route in 204 Her record follows Year Sts 1st 2d 3d Won 1933 10 511 42665 1934 AGRARIAN AGRARIANHas Has raced both as a twoyearold and a threeyearold starting eleven times last year and six in 1934 As a twoyearold he won three races and finished second twice out of eleven starts Nothing startling marked his 1933 campaign He made an auspicious debut as a threeyearold by win ¬ ning his first start at Tropical Park Janu ¬ ary 3 covering threequarters in 111 In his following three races he finished second Brown Toney took his measure January 27 Next Time Supply ran away from him in the Hialeah Stakes to beat him by four lengths Later the same Time Supply again trimmed Agrarian in the Bahama Handicap A week later Agrarian won an overnight race at one mile in the fast time of 136 He was reserved for the Florida Derby March 17 and finished second beaten by a length by Time Clock His next start was in a purse race at Havre de Grace at a mile and seventy yards in which he was beaten by Cavalcade by two lengths The Chesa ¬ peake Stakes again brought these two horses together and as before Cavalcade stepped out in front and stayed there setting a new track record for Havre de Grace for the mile and a sixteenth covering the western fans hope will be the first of her sex to win the Derby since Regret in 1915 She was the opening favorite in the future books al 8 to 1 and has ruled one of the choices throughout the training period Her juvenile record was Eight starts five victories three times unplaced with earnings of 55364 Her first important triumph was in the Arlington Lassie Stakes in which she defeated her stablemate Far Star The latter defeated Mata Hari in the Arlington Futurity and after this Mata Hari finished unplaced in the Hawthorne Juvenile Handi ¬ cap and in the Matron Stakes at Belmont Park but she came back in a big way at Latonia to win both the Breeders Futurity and Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes In the Breeders over the Futurity course she carried 124 pounds and in the Jockey Clul Stakes at one mile she carried 119 It was in the Matron Stakes that she accepted her highest weight assignment carrying 127 pounds and she was never a factor in this race finishing last She is gifted with re ¬ markable speed and according to none other than Salvator one of Americas most bril liant turf writers and an authority on breed ing and racing Mata Hari is one of the best mares seen in this country in many years yearsMata Mata Hari has trained to the satisfaction of her owner and trainer and makes her first start of the year in the Derby On Thursday April 19 she worked a mile in 139 and galloped out the mile and an eighth in 154 Two days later she dem ¬ onstrated that the Derby route held no ter ¬ ror for her by covering the distance in 209 the last quarter in 24 a fifth of a second faster than the first quarter She is ready Her record follows Year Sts 1st 2d 3d Won 1933 8 5 0 0 55364 1934 SPY HILL HILLAlthough Although he won only one race as a juve ¬ nile Spy Hill will carry the popular silks of Mrs Payne Whitneys Greentree Stable in the Derby He started in the Hopeful Stakes finishing sixth and in the Cham ¬ pagne Stakes finishing fifth retiring for the season after that September event Spy Hill is a son of Spion Kop Marvella II and one of the best bred colts in the field In his first out this year he won a mile and seventy yards allowance race at Jamaica in 143 but was beaten five days later over the same distance by High Quest and Speedmore in the same time by one and onehalf lengths He was given his final trial on May 1 at Belmont Park and startled onlookers by going the Derby route in 204 The frac tionals of this great trial were quarter in 24 half in 48 threequarters in 112 and mile in 138 being eased up a mile and an eighth in 151 His record follows and finished second three times in seven starts He de ¬ feated Miss Merriment and a good field at Aqueduct and was second to Sgt Byrne in the Remsen Handicap at Jamaica This year he has been started once and set a new track record at Churchill Downs for a mile covering the distance in 135 thereby qualifying handsomely for his Derby en gagement Year Sts 1st 2d 3d Won 1933 7 2 3 0 1400 1934 1 1 0 0 600 Year Sts 1st 2d 3d Won WonSGT SGT BYRNE BYRNEOne One of the several and one of the best sons Derby3e of Stimulus nominated for the Derby 3e had a fine record in sprint races as a twoyearold winning six out of eighteen in ¬ cluding the Remsen Handicap and East View Stakes finishing up his stakes program with a victory in the International Speed Test Special Sweepstakes of the United Hunts meeting defeating Flying Heels Good Ad ¬ vice and Winooka This was run over the six furlongs distance on a sloppy track in the time of 111 Sgt Byrne also was second in the Nursery Handicap second in intie tie Champagne Stakes and fourth in the Junior Champion Stakes We won his sec ¬ ond start after which in the course of a amsy msy campaign he was never in a soft spot spotAs As a threeyearold he has made but one start winning the Paumonok Handicap at atamaica amaica from a field of topnotch older olderlorses lorses The race was at threequarters which was run in 111 His record fol folows ows entries were received and for a time ruled favorite an unprecedented incident in connection with early wagering on the Derby He has worked in a sensational manner on several occasions displaying great speed and stam na However he failed badly in his first start this year in the Preparation Purse won by Peace Chance in which he finished unplaced unplacedSir Sir Thomas is a son of Sir Gallahad III Breathing Spell by Dark Ronald bred by Robert A Fairbairn Although rated a very good colt he was not given serious consid ¬ eration for the Derby until his now cele rated finish in the Futurity Stakes when he all but caught Singing Wood failing by only a head on the muddy track It was generally agreed that he was the better colt f the two that day and that if the distance lad been a mile or more Sir Thomas would aave won He carried 117 pounds in that race to 122 on Singing Wood He started slowly and finished rapidly and in good order orderPrior Prior to the Futurity the only stake in which he participated as a money horse was he National Stallion Stakes at Belmont in June which was won by Black Buddy Fog Dound second Sir Thomas third ten lengths from the winner and Chicstraw fourth In the Hopeful Stakes won by Bazaar he was out of the running practically all the way in the Champagne Stakes won by Hadagal Sir Thomas finished seventh and shortly aefore going in the Futurity he finished un ¬ placed in an allowance race won by High Quest His record follows Year Sts 1st 2d 3d Won 1933 11 0 2 3 10600 1934 1 CAVALCADE CAVALCADEA A splendid Englishbred colt in the Brookmeade Stable which ranged among the foremost of the twoyearolds of 1933 He was unplaced in but three races in eleven starts with two victories three seconds and three thirds to his credit His racing was confined to stakes with the exception of three overnight events He won the Hyde Park Stakes at Arlington Park was second in the Sanford Stakes Eastern Shore Handi ¬ cap at Havre de Grace and Spalding Lowe Jenkins Handicap at Laurel finished third in the Saratoga Sales Stakes and Walden Handicap and fourth in the Richard John ¬ son Stakes Naturally starting in such as the above fixtures Cavalcade met the out ¬ standing thoroughbreds of his age and proved at all times that he was a colt of superior quality and a worthy candidate for the Kentucky Derby and other threeyear old fixtures He opened his threeyearold season by winning the Shenandoah Purse over the mile and seventy yards course at Havre de Grace in track record time This was followed by a victory in the Chesapeake Stakes in which he 7450SINGING SINGING WOOD WOODSinging Singing Wood von the Futurity Stakes of f 1933 and this victory scored on a muddy r track and over one of the best fields that t went to the post last year made him the s leading money winner of 1933 with 88050 to his credit He was sired by Royal Min ¬ strel Glade by Touch Me Not and his ad ¬ vent as a racer attracted considerable at ¬ tention Though owned by Mrs J H Whit ¬ ney he made his racing debut at Arlington i Park Chicago winning his first start by six c lengths from Sir Ten and Cavalcade He 3 later lost a close decision to Cavalcade in i the Hyde Park Stakes after which he de ¬ feated Sun Tempest and Count Rae in a i sprint After finishing third to Far Star r and Hadagal in the Arlington Futurity he j moved to Saratoga and finished second to j Wise Daughter in the Saratoga Special His 3 next start was in the Grand Union Hotel 1 Stakes run on a muddy track finishing I unplaced He was also out of the money y in the Hopeful Stakes then earned third 1 money in the Nursery Handicap at Belmont t Park his final appearance before his tri I umph in the Futurity In the latter stake his margin of victory was only a head headHe He showed little in his one start this year finishing fifth in the Chesapeake Stakes to Cavalcade Agrarian Discovery and Time Supply His record follows Year Sts 1st 2d 3d Won 1933 9 3 2 2 88050 1934 1 RISKULUS RISKULUSNorman Norman W Churchs Northway Stable has in Rfskulus the outstanding candidate among those that raced during the winter He has been backed heavily to win the Derby his odds being cut from 100 to 8 to 1 This was brought about partly by his vic ¬ tory in the Agua Caliente Derby which was by the smallest of margins but more by his remarkable performance in the Agua Caliente Handicap which was won by Gal ¬ lant Sir stablemate of Riskulus with the latter after setting the pace finishing only a head behind The race was run in the splendid time of 202 for the mile and a quarter the Derby distance Only one Derby has been run in faster time It seemed to be the prevailing opinion among competent ob ¬ servers of the handicap that Riskulus could have beaten Gallant Sir had he been ridden L put Riskulus won two races in seven starts as a juvenile one of his conquests coming in the Burlingame Handicap at Tanf oran He j finished third in Tanforans Juvenile Stakes and fourth in the Arlington Inaugural Han ¬ dicap at Arlington Downs His recent defeat in the Texas Derby lost him many admirers but his connections believe he will wipe out that defeat by victory today His record year and as he had failed as favorite in his first Hialeah appearance he went to the post for the Derby at prac ¬ tically 15 to 1 in the betting Carrying 114 I pounds four less than the other colts he defeated he overcame adverse racing luck c in the early part finished fast and was go ¬ ing away at the end of the mile and an i eighth leading Agrarian and Boy Valet by a length Soon Over four lengths away Time a Clock had opened at 60 to 1 in the Ken ¬ tucky Derby betting but after this victory f dropped to 40 Time Clock made his first start in the Saratoga Sales Stakes last I August but did not win until the middle B of September at Aqueduct and his Florida Derby victory was the second of his career His best juvenile performance was his sec ¬ ond to Chicstraw in the Endurance Handi ¬ DISCOVERYIn In the opinion of some of those who ob ¬ served some of his races as a twoyearold I Discovery is one of the strongest of the e eastern candidates He exhibited a tendency y to go on and appeared to be capable of f considerable intensive racing taking after r his sire Display He won only two races s in fourteen starts but was often in the e money and it was his lot to encounter the e strongest possible opposition In his last 1 four starts he was either second or third d and the winners of those four races were e Mata Hari and Chicstraw The first of the e final four was the Richard Johnson Stakes 3 won by Chicstraw with Wise Daughter sec ond and Discovery was third ahead of Cav r alcade Bonanza and Red Wagon all of if which are in the Derby In the Breeders s Futurity at Latonia he finished third to o Mata Hari and Giggling finishing strong j In the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes he was s second to Mata Hari beaten two and a half If lengths after racing wide In the Walden n Handicap at Pimlico he was beaten only a neck by Chicstraw and finished six lengths is ahead of Cavalcade In his only start this is year he finished third to Cavalcade and d Agrarian in the Chesapeake
