BALIOS WINS BY HEAD Gets Up in Final Strides to Take Pimlico Feature Eehester Finishes Gamely but Bows Bowsto to Phipps Racer Kurtsinger KurtsingerAstride Astride Two Winners BALTIMORE Md May 4 Balios son of Chicle and Rowes Bud with ankles flam ¬ boyantly iodined but otherwise looking well was the star of this afternoons racing at Pimlico which was conducted over a tough dryingout track Carrying 118 pounds he got up in the final sixteenth to win a sixfurlong dash for 3000 platers that had the fifth place on an ordinary program by a head from Mrs Elmer True mans Ilchester Ral Parrs Star Porter coupled in the betting with Ilchester was third only about a foot back and in order were Slipper King How High Acautaw Hastipast and Silk Flag FlagThe The coupled pair were favorites and there was money in generous proportions for Balios Silk Flag and Acautaw The weather was bright and pleasantly warm for a change There is not much to be said of the race save that Silk Flag led for five furlongs and was passed in the last sixteenth by Balios Ilchester Star Porter and Slipper King Balios got the verdict in the final strides and he was Kurtsingers second winning mount The first was Vic aress winner of the second race Balios is still racing under the silks of Henry C Phipps of New York YorkEarl Earl Porter was slow at the barrier as usual on Beau Govans in the initial race for Marylandbred twoyearolds in which he was about an equal favorite with Be There but he rode through the stretch with something of the skill that characterized his work at Rockingham Park Sonny Workman was not so fortunate with Be There starting for the first time in Mary ¬ land He would not extend himself The son of Rustic is owned by B S Cutler Gun ¬ wale Gay Blade and Shaggy Ann outran Beau Govans to the turn for home but the Rustic Colt charging on the outside in the last fifty yards scored by a head a like margin separating Gunwale from Gay Blade
