QUEL JEU FEATURE WINNER Swerves Badly at Jamaica but Out ¬ stays Persistent Douglas F Lnurelton Purse Finish Thrills Big Crowd Crowdat at New York Threatening Weather WeatherPrevails Prevails Track Muddy NEW YORK N Y May 4 George Odom saddled the winner of the feature offering at Jamaica today when he sent out Quel Jeu for the Arden Farm Stable to have him earn a close decision in the Laurelton Purse It was Mr Sheldon Fairbanks Douglas F that made the finish a close one while George H Bostwicks Blind Bowboy favor ¬ ite for the race was third thirdIt It was the first appearance of the year for Blind Bowboy but reports on his progress in work hours gave Him tlie call He had no excuses as iar as racing luck was concerned and was beaten while Quel Jeu bore out badly at the head of the stretch and had to be much the best to wihJ wihJMost Most of the day the skies were overcast and rain threatened but none fell and the weather was seasonable A big crowd was out and there was just enough came out for the races to make it an enjoyable day of sport From a good start in the Laurelton Doug ¬ las F was sent away like a quarter horse by little Lynch and he was soon two lengths clear Blind Bowboy was in second place and he was just showing the way to R Pin ¬ chot another that was alert leaving his stall It was expected that Blind Bowboy with his usual burst of speed would speedily take command but Robertson had him un ¬ der slight restraint in the early stages con ¬ tent with his position Quel Jeu was lapped on R Pinchot following the Bostwick sprinter sprinterDouglas Douglas F held his lead readily in the run through the back stretch and Lynch was saving ground with him next to the rail as he set the pace Making the turn Robert ¬ son moved up with Blind Bowboy but at the same time Stout shook up R Pinchot and Malley moved up on the outside with Quel Jeu Thus there was a closing up back of the Angon gelding but he was stubbornly sticking to his lead The course chosen by Malley cost Quel Jeu some ground and then as he went out badly at the head of the stretch it appeared his winning chance was gone When he went out Stout slipped up on the inside with R Pinchot and for an instant that colt was in second place placeBy By this time Blind Bowboy was doing his best and was well beaten It was not until well inside the last furlong that Quel Jeu began to come with that rush that was to carry him to victory R Pinchot tired after his flash of speed but Douglas F was fight ¬ ing it out stubbornly and it was only in the final strides that Quel Jeu dropped his nose down in front frontBlind Blind Bowboy was another two lengths back but a length and a half before R Pinchot PinchotFortification Fortification the only other starter was devoid of speed and was last throughout the running runningC C Perna was suspended for three days by starter Cassidy
