OPEN HEARTH SURPRISES Defeats Tick On and Golden Way at Churchill Downs 17000 Derby Fans Visit Famous FamousLouisville Louisville Track Day Before BeforeDerby Derby Fast Run Feature LOUISVILLE Ky May 4 Every indica ¬ tion that the Kentucky Derby attendance record is in danger was shown here this aft ¬ ernoon when a crowd of approximately 17 000 persons turned out at Churchill Downs to witness a program featured by the Daniel Boone BiCentennial Purse at one mile The event resulted into a mild upset when H G Shoemakers Open Hearth came from be ¬ hind to defeat E R Bradleys Tick On and J E Wideners Golden Way the strong fa favqrite vqrite Clearing skies and summer weather pre ¬ vailed fq the days spqrt with the result that few if any of the persons here in ad vance pf the Derby failed to remain away from the track The feature was run in fasttSme a mark of 13 being reached but it brought afeout considerable roughness with Open Hearth and Tick On being the principal offenders The Shoemaker veteran crowded both Tick On and Golden Way in making his move through the stretch on the outside while Tick On bothered the Widener representa ¬ tive shortly after the start when he bore over from the outside and again in the stretch stretchTick Tick On and Golden Way had the most early speed with the former taking a clear lead after the first quarter after bothering Golden Way The latter held second place easily with Open Hearth and Indian Salute following in close order while At Top the only other starter was well back backLeaving Leaving the back stretch Wayne Wright sent Golden Way up on the outside and he joined Tick On just before turning into the stretch Both horses went wide into the stretch but nevertheless Lee Humphries called on Open Hearth and sent him after the leaders further out in the track In the early stages of the final straightaway the two favorites raced head and head with neither having an apparent advantage but in the meantime Open Hearth gained on them steadily and after passing the furlong post reached and passed the two choices choicesThen Then under hard urging from Humphries he drew away slpwly until he had a margin of threefourths of a length at the end In the last fifty yards he bore over on Tick On which in the meantime had drawn away from Golden Way The maneuver caused Indian Salute next to the rail to be blocked so that he had no chance to finish willingly Oswego Princess showed a good effort to win at six furlongs from a band of six all fillies and mares in the first race for which Two Tricks which received a rather timid ride under the young beginner L Garrett received so much of the play that she closed at oddson Oswego Princess went to the front within a few strides of the start and was never in danger Second honors fell to Babuska She held that position throughout and though beaten by five lengths led the choice by one length and a half Pretty Penny was fourth fourthWhen When his mount was in close quarters less than a sixteenth after the start Garrett eased the favorite back until she was last and kept near the center of the track in the last half mile she was unable to make up a great deal of ground
