GOVERNOR WATCHES DETROIT SPORT States Chief Executive Decorates Clotho After Latter LatterGallops Gallops ThreeQuarters in 110 to Win the theOpening Opening Day Feature in Record Time DETROIT Mich May 17 The Whitney colors ever prominent in American racing were carried to a surprising but wellearned victory in the Detroit Inaugural Handicap which topped the opening days program of the 120day season at the Fair Grounds track this afternoon It was the sixyearold Clotho that ran the threequarters in 110 clipping twofifths of a second from the mark established by Speedy Skippy in the pre ¬ vious race to beat H C Hatchs Projectile for the major award A Bartelsteins Poly ¬ dorus was third a length before Flying Sailor which proved better than the well backed Curacao Constant Wife and Dark Hope which completed the dash in the order named Rehoboth fell near the final three eighths but luckily Mack Winters escaped serious injuries The lad was shaken up and cancelled his remaining engagements The fall probably was caused by the horse bleeding for he was covered with blood when he got to his feet feetThere There was a quick start to the race and although Projectile was first under way Constant Wife was rushed into command She drew away into a good lead in the run down the back stretch but Projectile forged to the front near the final quarter At that stage A Robertson called on the winner and entering the stretch Clotho took command Although he drew away into a clear lead Projectile was not done and he came again with a determined rush that put the winner under pressure to withstand his last chal ¬ lenge From a slow beginning Polydorus gradually caught his opponents and in the run through the stretch wore down Flying Sailor for the minor award awardThere There was a
