DOWNS FINISHES THRILL Lively Day of Sport at Louisville With Close Contests Secret Tryst Makes Auspicious 1934 1934Debut Debut Governor Huby Laffoon LaffoonAmong Among Those Present LOUISVILLE Ky May 17 With the close of the meeting only two days off a greater interest in Churchill Downs racing developed today one of the largest offday crowds of the meeting watching the sport that was offered under sunny skies and on a good track For the second time since Derby Day when he was the honored guest Governor Ruby Laffoon came down from the capitol for the afternoon and like others in the big and enthusiastic crowd found his interest enlivened by the driving finishes that resulted i iIn In the Merrick Place Claiming Purse which shared feature ranking with the Crab Orchard Springs Purse the Tryster gelding Secret Tryst won by a head from Gilbert Elston with three others of which Nituma was best in their wake The victory of the winner ridden by Willie Hanka snapped a slump for the stable presided over by the capable and popular young horseman How ¬ ard Wells and raced under the silks of D B Midkiff of Lexington LexingtonAlthough Although inclined to loaf the winner pre ¬ vailed in the lead throughout Darting to the front at the start he ran along in an easy lead to the turn where Hanka had to work on him as he showed a desire to put forth less of an effort Here Nituma moved up to be within half a length of the Midkiff gelding but he again drew away from his company entering the stretch and though tiring withstood Gilbert Elstons belated rush Nituma and Shepherd Boy fought it out to a nose finish for minor honors and they were a length and a half away from the leaders leadersShepherd Shepherd Boy a frequent offender car ¬ ried most of the play with Nituma second choice and odds of better than 10 to 1 pre ¬ vailed against the winner It was Secret Trysts first appearance of the year I Continued on tiventysecond page DOWNS FINISHES THRILL Continued from first page A spectacular finish also resulted in the Crab Orchard Springs Purse Pot au Brooms the surprising winner was only a neck bet ¬ ter than New Deal and with Advising Anna a nose away the finish rivalled the most stirring of the meeting Forced to maintain a fast pace to hold the lead A vising Anna after racing Chance Line into submission slowly fell before New Deals challenge and when within a few strides of the finish the latter succumbed to the winner winnerThe The spirited manner in which Advising Anna New Deal and Chance Line fought for pacemaking honors was a big factor in the victors success In the last furlong he closed a gap of four lengths on the leaders Frank Ormont leading High Diver St Jensund and Chance Line was fourth fourthLester Lester Balaski in W Sachsenmaiers col ¬ ors was astride the victorious Pot au Feu gelding his second winner of the day dayPot Pot au Brooms ran the eight furlongs in 137 the superior condition of the chute over the main course being a factor in the fast time timeThe The sport opened up in formful fashion when Iceberg a daughter of Byrd was re ¬ turned an easy winner over Diavoless Mary T and two other maiden twoyearold fillies at five furlongs Earl Pool brought the choice from behind the pace and after reaching the front in the final furlong she pulled away until her final advantage was three lengths At the start the winner stum ¬ bled when the ground spread from under her and everything considered her effort was a good one oneLester Lester Balaski added another winner to his imposing score for the meeting when he drove Bob Custer home in front of Bards town Fair Cynthia and others of the 1000 variety in the second race The victor wore down the favorite and early pacemaker Bardstown in the stretch but tired after gaining command and was under pressure as he led Bardstown past the finish by a neck The latter was two lengths better than Fair Cynthia with Shoteur next Fractious at the post Traggat began in too much of a tangle to have much of a chance chanceThree Three wellbacked horses finished in the money in the third race over five furlongs for twoyearolds when Charlie Dawn Busy Prince and Little Cynic finished in that order After racing Miss Jap into submis ¬ sion Charlie Dawn took command and won as his rider A Richard pleased He beat Busy Prince which closed a big gap in the stretch by three lengths while Little Cynic which won the first race here yesterday finished a length and a half farther back backPantaloons Pantaloons choice for the fourth race also for cheaper platers and decided over threequarters caused a lot of disappoint ¬ ment when she failed to land among the first three Lady Pal Rettef arid Dusky Dame leading the former Whitney filly in that order Pantaloons went to her defeat without a mishap and except for a mild rally in the closing furlong was never much of a threat for the three leaders
