SPY HILL VICTORIOUS Greentree Stable Colt Defeats Fair eno and Burgoo King Gallops One Mile in Belmont Park ParkFeature Feature in 1 36 Big Crowd Crowdat at Famous Track NEW YORK N Y May 17 Spy Hill after failing in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes carried the Greentree Stable silks to victory in the best offering at Belmont Park this afternoon This was the Burgomaster Purse and setting a fast pace all the way the son of Spion Kop finished in 136 to win from William Woodwards Faireno to which he gave away two pounds on the scale Back of Faireno was Edward R Bradleys Burgoo King winner of both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness of 1932 and the only other starter was J B Belks Flaming Mamie This was the feature of an interest ¬ ing card that brought out another big crowd to the Nassau County course courseWeather Weather conditions were more favorable than those of the opening day when there was a rise in temperature and there was some slight improvement in the arrange ¬ ment of the betting ring though other im ¬ provements are needed and promised in that department departmentFrom From the start in the Burgomaster Coucci at once sent Spy Hill into command Brennan had equipped the colt with blink ¬ ers for the running and they at least seemed to help his speed Racing a first quarter in 23Vz he had a big lead over Burgoo King which was in second place and Faireno was well back of the Bradley fiveyearold with Flaming Mamie out of it almost from the first dozen strides Never tiring Spy Hill put in a second quarter in 23 to reach the halfmile post in A6Vs and that carried him into a clear lead of three lengths It was a pace that soon had Bur ¬ goo King staggering and Faireno was stead ¬ ily drawing up on the son of Bubbling Over but Spy Hill went along f6r another quarter in 24 reaching the six furlongs mark in 110 110COUCCIS COUCCIS SKILL IN EVIDENCE Such a pace was calculated to take its toll and it is small wonder that the colt was beginning to shorten his stride when the final furlong was reached but he still had to run a final furlong in 25 to beat Faireno The son of Chatterton after hav ¬ ing avoided the killing early pace finished with a rush in the last quarter and it took all of Couccis skill to keep Spy Hill going to be the winner winnerThe The winning margin was a neck and the challenge of Faireno carried him out six lengths before Burgoo King which in turn had beaten Flaming Mamie by a like dis ¬ tance tanceG G D Wideners Cheka was winner over a big band of plater juveniles in the open ¬ ing four and a half furlongs dash through the straight Widener course Following him closely came H W Maxwells Tangerloo and Ogle from the Maemere Farm saved third from Teeter Totter TotterFourteen Fourteen started and the start was a good one with Cheka away in the first flight though headed by Ogle and Susie V After having closed a considerable gap Tangerloo reached a contending position and as the others weakened
