Here and There on the Turf Champion Juveniles Come Later Weather Retards Youngsters Plat Eye is Present Leader Texas Schedule Sensible Few outstanding twoyearolds have been brought to the surface so far this season but that does not necessarily mean the di ¬ vision is weak This is no time to be mak ¬ ing any assertionabout whether the juveniles are or arent of any account September will do for that maybe later Some good youngsters have shown under colors how ¬ ever which is entirely as it should be as inferior colts seldomrshow the way in the more important spring specials such as the Aberdeen Stakes Youthful Stakes and the recentlyrun Jilvenile Stakes at Belmont Park But it has been ttie habit of the leading stables and a creditable one tooto wait on their more promising twoyearolds and thereby give them ample opportunity to ma ¬ ture before asking them for a competitive effort That is why no true line on the juve ¬ nile situation is obtainable at this time An inquisitive person might look over the stakes books of the great tracks like Belmont Park Arlington Park and Saratoga and get an idea of what youngsters the various trainers think are the most likely to succeed to greatness but to name the champion or even prospective titleholder now would be fool ¬ hardy t tThe The good twoyearolds as a whole will be later showing up this season than for some time Not only is there an increasing ten ¬ dency among trainers to save a promising youngster until summer has passed its zenith but the rough spring in the North this year prevented otherwise impatient horsemen from having their twoyearolds as well as older material ready for early campaigning A natural consequence would be for the juveniles to be of better quality this fall and to make stouter threeyearolds and older horses in the seasons to come comeOf Of the twoyearolds so far uncovered the Greentree Stables Plat Eye is worthy of consideration due to his victory in the Juvenile Stakes if nothing else The bay son of Chicle and Crazy Moon by Broomstick captured the Belmont event in game fashion and not unlikely he will remain a good one as he is bred that way The Brbokmeade Stables Psychic Bid the runnerup also is likely to lingefr near the top rank although he probably will never crash into Hhe upper circle Bob Smith is said to have fastpr youngsters in his motieyrgetting barn than this fellow named for Hal Simms SimmsAngelic Angelic which finished third in the Juve ¬ nile has gone as far as she pan go in the ladderclimbing game it is our belief Mrs Damon Runyons filly was precocious which was responsible to a great degree for her good campaigning this year but as more and more good youngsters are brought to her light we are afraid she will gradually lose sight of top honors Sylvester W Labrot Maryland sportsman apparently has a pair of good colts in Stainforth winner of the Aberdeen Stakes and Kings Pleasure a re ¬ cent graduate Stainforth is a half brother to Tred Avon so pomes by his ability riat urally Other likely juveniles will attract notice before Belmphts spring meeting is con ¬ cluded or during the session now under way at Detroit Latpnia and Washington Park but ho decision as to the probable champion should be made until after such trainers as Bob Smith Jack Joyner Toni Healey Big Jim Healy Derby Dick Thompson Jairies Fitzsimmons Pete Coyne George Odom and Bill Brenrian have trotted out every promis wont do that until autumns cooler weather is in the offing offingTexas Texas racing associations are preventing themselves from going wild by the schedule theyve adopted for this fall The four tracks so far developed Dallas Arlington Downs Houston and San Antonio will of ¬ fer nearly three months of racing starting October 2 and ending December 22 Each of the courses will race for nineteen days with the exception of Arlington Downs which will be content with sixteen days Three of the meetings overlap one day but that worrySuch shouldnt give anybody an acute worry Such a program reflects careful study on the part of the various promoters and it means theyve come to the sensible conclu ¬ sion that too much racing will finally de ¬ velop into no racing at all Shorter meet ¬ ings find every one concerned public horsemen jockeys officials and even the horses in a better frame of mind Detroit probably will wish it hadnt taken on so much by the time the Fourth of July conies around and that will mark only onethird of the meeting concluded concludedJack Jack Joyner must feel greater encourage ¬ ment over Chicstraws chances in the Bel ¬ mont Stakes following the colts victory in an overnight event at one and oneeighth miles Thursday George D Wideners colt slowed up perceptibly toward the finish of the Withers as though he tired in the slick going but he did no tiring in his recent effort if the fractional time is correct and means anything even though he barely de ¬ feated the unpretentious Good Goods Car ¬ rying 113 pounds and leading all the way Chicstraw was timed the mile and an eighth in satisfactoryThe 149 which is very satisfactory The fractions for the race show the mile run in 138 so that means Chicstraw ran the final furlong in 11 Any horse that can turn an eighth in 12 seconds or better after going a mile has class It further proves that conditions in the Withers did not suit the Widener colt or he would have given Singing Wood and Roustabout more of an argument through the stretch Chicstraw can be expected to start in the Belmont and a victory would be greatly appreciated as this branch of the Widener family has not had the pleasure doubly enjoyed by Joseph E Widener
