DERBY HOPE TRIUMPHS Rock X Outruns Crack Band in Headliner at Detroit Track Candescent Strong Favorite Fin ¬ ishes Second to Tranquility Farm ThreeYearOld Manya Wins DETROIT Mich June 1 Rock X the Detroit Derby hope of H H Cross Tran ¬ quility Farm Stable was an easy winner of he Powatan Purse the fifth and principal race of the program offered at the Fair Grounds track here this afternoon At the end of threequarters C W Browne Jra Candescent was second two lengths in the wake of the winner and a head before L Haymakers Slipper King which beat G V Vhitneys Rhadamanthus by the same dis ance prizeEleven for the minor prize Eleven threeyearolds started the sprint with Candescent a 11 to 10 choice over his opponents opponentsThere There was a short delay at the start but once aligned Candescent was the first under way In the first forty yards however Rock X was in command and as the journey rogressed he increased his advantage Dur ¬ ing the first quarter Coya and Thataway offered mild challenges but approaching the final turn Slipper King moved into conten ¬ tion and although unable to offer the win ¬ ner a serious threat he put Candescent to a hard drive in withstanding him at the fin ¬ ish From a belated start Rhadamanthus picked up the leaders gradually and was running the best of all at the end Under endUnder 111 pounds one of the high weights of the field Rock X scored the second suc ¬ cess of his career and ran the distance in the good time of 112 112WEATHER WEATHER HURTS ATTENDANCE ATTENDANCEMidsummer Midsummer weather the first of the meeting prevailed for the sport and al ¬ though the thermometers in town registered 90 there was a refreshing breeze at the track However conditions had much to do with the crowd which fell below expecta ¬ tions The track was at its best Merry bestMerry Chatter finally found a band that she could beat and at the end of the fourth race had little left in winning over Bright Knot The Hun and four others Rushed into command in the first forty yards the winner which was well backed drew away to a long lead While the favored Vol wood and Gertrude L which were closest to the pace for a half mile tired in the drive Bright Knot improved his position at a loss of ground and barely managed to head The Hun for second award Phil awardPhil T Chinn provided his first winner of the meeting when Polish Beau making his initial start and a pronounced choice ac ¬ counted for the opening dash Heros Lady was second with Dark Dianne third Showing thirdShowing greenness the son of Polymelian and Beauty Star was hustled into the lead soon after the break and although he was inclined to bear out he came to the end nearly three lengths before Heros Lady Dark Dianne like the leading two held her position throughout throughoutIN IN MOTION DECISIVELY DECISIVELYIn In Motion performing for the first time under the colors of H C Hatch was a deci ¬ sive and popular winner of the second race another dash over five furlongs for two yearolds Roping was second with Always True third thirdNine Nine started with the winner ridden by S Young losing little time in taking com ¬ mand Disposing of Pish Tush in the first quarter the Hatch juvenile drew away into a good lead and the finish found him well in hand and with nearly a three lengths advantage Roping which raced close to the leaders moved into second place in the final quarter and although unable to men ¬ ace the winner held a clear advantage over Always True which was forced to work his way up upThe The H C Hatch stable furnished its sec ¬ ond winner of the afternoon when Trigling beat Incandescent by a head for the major award in the third race and TwSdgets was third thirdSterling Sterling Young who previously scored with In Motion rode a well judged race Continued on thirtysecond page DERBY HOPE TRIUMPHS Continued from first page with the victor and but for being impeded when Incandescent came over midway in the stretch might have enjoyed a better po ¬ sition at the finish Twidgets moved up with a rush after the first quarter and although tiring was the best of the favored Cuiras ¬ sier which tired after reaching the lead after a half mile
