TARWATEREARNSPURSE Well Backed Hodges Racer Defeats Longus at Homewood Extreme Heat Affects Days Attend ¬ ance at Washington Park Derby Fans Arriving HOMEWOOD 111 June 1 With nothing of importance in the offering of seven claim ¬ ing races almost unbearably hot weather Loop readings of over 100 being reported and a big Derby coming on tomorrow it was only natural that little interest should be shown in todays racing at Washington Park A crowd of 3500 was in the stands when Tar Water W Hodges Bradleys Tbney gelding raced from in front of Longus Dr Louis Hamman and three others in the fifth race but the heat made every ¬ one groggy and the winner well backed raced to his victory without the usual vocal encouragement from patrons patronsUnder Under the burning sun Tar Waters shin ¬ ing coat was first to show in front as the field left the stalls in the distant chute Nicely rated by Paul Keester Dayton Ky boy who was riding his second winner he Held Dr Louis Hamman at a safe distance as the early furlongs were covered and after withstanding the latters most determined challenge just inside the stretch came on to remain safely in front as Longus raced up to head Dr Louis Hamman for second place placeBadly Badly outrun for threequarters and still ten lengths back of the winner at the fur ¬ long post Longus came with a rush to fin ¬ ish within a length and a quarter of the victor An even effort was shown by Four Spot which saved fourth money Try Fair and American Smile completed the field fieldOLD OLD TIME WINNER HERE HEREJoe Joe McCarthy wellknown handicapper and former horse owner is here for the American Derby which he won with C H Todd in 1887 and just missed with Sorrento in 1889 He arrived this morning coming from Belmont Park He has resided in Saratoga Springs for some years yearsThomas Thomas S Scott general manager of the Kentucky Association accompanied by Joe Harting and John Dowd led the vanguard from Lexington for the American Derby DerbyMrs Mrs R Cochran furnished the winner of the first race a six furlongs dash in the Supremus filly Polly E Under a rather rough ride by the veteran Nick Burger the winner raced to her mildly surprising win by a length and onequarter with the fa ¬ vorite Night Jasmine second and Aliens third Soon after the start the winner im ¬ peded Long Bit and bumping Night Jas ¬ mine before she moved around Aliens to the front entering the stretch just about had victory assured before Night Jasmine could get back into good stride strideThe The Illinoisowned and bred Spicate a bay son of Spic and Span and Blushing carried L M Seversons colors to their first victory of the meeting when he graduated with a narrowly gained victory over Lady Louella in the second race for maiden twoyearolds After racing from far back the Severson colt ridden by P Keester snatched victory from Lady Louella when making the final strides a head parting them at the finish where Que Gato was third and Advantage fourth fourthJOCKEY JOCKEY E ARCARO SUSPENDED SUSPENDEDConsiderable Considerable swerving in the stretch where all but the then leading Que Gato and the victor performed greenly marked the race and brought a tenday suspension to E Arcaro who rode Lady Louella Trend second choice to Que Gato had little chance under a poor ride by L Hardy who became excited as Hot Flash swerved over threat ¬ ening to impede his mount near the last furlong furlongLebam Lebam joined the Mikel stable winners for the meeting with a handily achieved victory over Para Four Durga and five others The winner a pronounced choice sprinted far away from her opponents entering the stretch and was not fully extended to keep safely in the van of the fastfinishing Para Four as the race drew to a close Para Four gained steadily on the extreme outside Strait Jacket and Les Balaski comprised the winning combination in the sixth race for which Oscillation which finished in fourth place was the favorite Strait Jacket won by a head with Tack second a length better than White Legs Oscillation went down without mishap Westrope saving ground with her and riding with all his skill in the final quarter Tiring near the end she lost third money by a head
