OPEN HEARTH FIRST Beats Coflier and Stjensund in inDividing Dividing Ridge Handicap Fiji Proves Big1 Disappointment Attendance Above Average for forFriday Friday at Latonia LATONIA Ky June 1 An improvedpro gram headed by the Dividing Ridge Handi ¬ cap proved a magnet in attracting an at ¬ tendance above the average proportions to Latonia Friday The main event engaged seven of the better grade performers at one mile and onesixteenth and was won by H G Shoemakers Open Hearth which registered the fastest time of the meeting when he traveled the distance in 145 win ¬ ning by two lengths and onehalf from the Greenbrier Stables Coflier which was among the threeyearolds while B O Hick mans Stjensund closed in third place with Southland Duke a nose in the wake of the latter to account for the minor award In the order named and well strung out came Miss Kentucky Fiji and Brown Molasses MolassesFavorite Favorite players suffered a rude setback in the first two races when Bonivan and Golden Throne won at long odds The latter was really overlooked in the wagering hav ¬ ing turned in a good performance in his pre ¬ vious race raceAs As usual Open Hearth cut up at the post and after exerting the patience of starter Hamilton for five minutes he had him placed on the outside from where he broke slowly but George South rated him cleverly while bringing him to contention and after traversing fiveeighths of the distance had him in the contention Southland Duke was the early pacemaker but found the task too exacting and after being much used in rac ¬ ing Stjensund and Miss Kentucky he gave way badly The winner got to the front turning for home and from then on drew out gradually until he had a safe margin and the diminutive South took him in hand in the closing strides tion of the purse Fiji was the disappoint ¬ ment when she not only failed to be a con ¬ tender but was well beaten back in sixth place placeHot Hot oppressive weather prevailed during the day and the patrons remained in the most sheltered part of the plant plantThe The fifth race named the Midland Purse and run over six furlongs was won by Mrs MrsC C E Gibsons Rolanda one of the outsiders in the betting The winner was greatly bene ¬ fited by the poor ride which the favorite Sallie Gray received from J Kederis who had the W E Smith mare in trouble re ¬ peatedly during the early racing and after being forced back to last place came to the outside and was running over horses near the finish As it was Sallie Gray was beaten only two heads Witches Night get ¬ ting second place placeRolanda Rolanda opened a threelengths lead turn ¬ ing into the home stretch but it was all she could do to withstand the determined bids of both Witches Night and Sallie Gray Ridge Mor from which some contention was expected had no excuses for his finishing where he did didBonivan Bonivan owned by S West scored a handy victory in the opening dash at six furlongs and paid off at 20 to 1 Buddy Apolis an ¬ other long shot finished second while the wellbacked Mai San was third Bonivan after disposing of Master Bruce in the open ¬ ing quarter took the lead and maintained his advantage throughout winning by three lengths Buddy Apolis raced well up all the way but Mai San came from far back to get show money moneyFirst First Regiment was unprepared at the start and never could get into contention contentionTwoyearolds Twoyearolds went five and onehalf fur ¬ longs in Kentucky for the first time this year in the second race and the winner turned up in H H Temple Jrs Golden Throne which came from an unexpected quarter to win in hand by two and onehalf lengths Too Busy well played was second and Charlie Jr the favorite finished third in the field of eleven elevenMr Mr Mack was the first to show out of the pack at the start and he showed the way for the first quarter The ultimate winner moved up to him with a rush at that point and after supplanting him won easily Too Busy closed a big gap to be second The winner paid 5680 for 2 2Jockey Jockey Leonard Hale who just completed a tenday suspension celebrated his return in the saddle by riding Cherry Time from the stable of Mrs Wm Crump in the third race Hale got the threeyearold gelding off in front and gradually widened his mar ¬ gin on the others until at the finish he was in front by four lengths The son of Flight of Time and Cherry Court ran the fastest threequarters of the meeting going the dis ¬ tance in 112 112Second Second to the oddson winner was Ladys Pal while third money went to Star Bud both of which were close up from the start Before the race Zeno Eye threw his rider riderD D C Smith and ran away a mile mileThe The fourth race another over six fur ¬ longs proved just a canter for B W Stivers Patsyette which won off by herself by six lengths Patsyette followed Earl Bakers pace for nearly half a mile then took com ¬ mand and never was threatened The win ¬ ner was given a clever ride by apprentice D TaylorSecond Taylor Second money fell to Proud Princess which outfinished Shadowdawn which ran third Earl Baker the object of some spirited lastminute speculation tired badly after his
