Discovery and Other Stars Clash Clashin in American Derby HOMEWOOD 111 June 1 Engaging the strongest field since the famous race was revived in 1926 tomorrows renewal of the 25000 added American Derby one of the most coveted of the threeyearold stakes probably will be decided before a record crowd for all Chicago tracks At least such was the outlook on the eve of the Washington Park race in which the marvelous Cavalcade present holder of the threeyearold crown will attempt to clinch his proud place at the head of the division In this prized fixture the foreignbred winner of the Kentucky Derby Americas premier race will encounter Dis ¬ covery Singing Wood Mata Hari Plight Patchpocket Bien Fait and possibly one or two others of lesser renown and if he succeeds here he should experience little trouble ex ¬ tending his dominance through subsequent engagements The array ready to oppose the champion is as formidable if not more so than any that may be mustered against him later in the season With the possible exception of his own stable companion High Quest all the rightful challengers are in ¬ cluded in tomorrows field The fieldThe race is proving such an attraction that all Chicago attendance records may fall and unless there is an unfavorable turn in weather Col M J Winn and judge C W Hay who guide the destines of the track probably will be called upon to look after a fence bulging crowd No rain means a lightning fast track Cavalcade trackCavalcade and Anarchy owned by the de ¬ lightful Mrs Isabel Dodge Sloane arrived Friday morning from Belmont Park and coming through the fast trip in fine fashion are ready for their mightest in this quest of new honors for their phenomenally suc ¬ cessful owner Tomorrow however Caval ¬ cade will attempt to give away a lot ¬ ness Stakes and as the concessions are large great as he is the job of winning may be too much for him However Bob Smith who developed the son of Lancegaye and others connected with the stable are not visibly worried As a matter of fact Smith actually be ¬ lieves that the Kentucky Derby winner will le a better horse for his race tomorrow than he was at Louisville Smith is pinning some of his hopes on the ability of Anarchy to push Mata Hari Singing Wood and pos ¬ sibly Bien Fait at a killing pace over the early quarters and if the son of Brooms accomplishes what Smith believes he will Cavalcade may hang it on Discovery and the others with his fmous stretch run runWith With an eightpound advantage in weight Discovery which will shoulder 118 to 126 for the champion is regarded as the one most likely to upset the Brookmeade star In the Preakness Stakes with imposts level Discovery was only a length away from Cavalcade and although Cavalcade was un ¬ lucky in that race many doubt if he can successfully concede eight pounds to such a foe as Discovery Mata Hari receiving five pounds from Cavalcade also is expected to greatly improve on her Kentucky Derby showing against the crack eastern title holder holderAll All through the field the champion is mak ¬ ing risky weight allowances and unless he is the champion the finish of the American Derby mile and a quarter may find him In defeat defeatThe The severity of his task notwithstanding Cavalcade is the reigning choice and as an entry with his stablemate probably will go to the post at short odds Discovery is seen as the second choice with Mata Hari next nextMack Mack Garner thirtyfiveyearold veteran who has been astride the Brookmeade per ¬ former in all his threeyearold races will pilot him again tomorrow and his nephew Willie Garner will have the leg up on An ¬ archy J Bejshak in Alfred Gwynne Van derbilts colors will be astride Discovery with Lee Humphries on Mata Hari Hum ¬ phries directed the Charles T Fisher filly queen of the turf to her victory in the Illi ¬ nois Derby and Lester Balaski who brought Plight out of the clouds to score in the Texas Derby will be aboard the W Sachsen maier hopeful tomorrow A Tipton for G W Ogles Patchpocket Eddie Arcaro on tKe Corsicana Stables Bien Fait Bob Jones who will ride Mrs John Hay Whitneys Sing ¬ ing Wood and J Westrope for either Sir Ten or Prince Pompey entered by Warren Wright are other riders with engagements in the race racePreparing Preparing for a throng that may go well beyond record figures track officials are more than doubling the mutuel police and other staffs All facilities will be pressed into service with numerous increases and enlargements for the day only With such hot weather as has prevailed the past few days the catering department no doubt will have a banner turnover and extra facilities for dispensing refreshments make up a good part of the special arrangements for the day dayChoice Choice boxes and reserved seats were gob ¬ bled up days ago and late comers desiring such accommodations may be disappointed disappointedApprentice Apprentice Mack Winters is reporting to Warren Wrights Calumet Farm Stable for a trial If his work is satisfactory Mr Wright will take over his contract contractKinney Kinney Pitt is here in search of a few horses He sold the several head he shipped to Ohio from
