TRANSBIRDS FIRST OF YEAR Watts Colorbearer Breaks Into Win ners Column at Fairmount Light Showers Fall at Noon but Fall to Affect Track or Heat Macks Pal Scores COLLINSVILLE 111 June 1 Transbird R T Watts fouryearold son of Transmute Thunderbird earned his first purse of the year when he triumphed in the fifth race or Granite City Purse a claiming affair over the mile route which served as the feature race on the card at Fairmount Park today Grand Union the favorite hung on for sec ¬ ond place with Boston Common saving third thirdThe The winner was ridden by apprentice R Moon and that youngster handled the Watts horse in perfect style allowing Rishi Uncle Lass and Grand Union to race themselves into exhaustion and coming to the outside entering the stretch caught tiring horses and looked like an easy winner shortly after passing the eighth post but Grand Union came again and Moon had to put the son of Transmute to a drive to gain a half length victory Boston Common was out ¬ paced for fiveeighths and began to make up ground gradually after coming wide for the final drive but could not reach the leaders He was a length behind Grand Union at the finish finishLight Light showers fell at noon but subsided be ¬ fore the horses vent to the post for the first race However the rain failed to hurt the footing as it was the first wet weather en ¬ countered here in some time The course was scraped after morning exercise hours by track superintendent Placide Frigerio and much slower racing time was recorded than in previous days daysGalapan Galapan earned her first purse in nearly two years when she pulled up two lengths in front of Tocaya in the fourth race over five and onehalf furlongs Monde saved third a length and a half behind Tocaya TocayaThe The winner ridden by L Wilson who had the fiveyearold daughter of Galetian back of the leaders after a quarter slipped through on the rail on the far turn and opened up such a good lead she was easing up near the finish Tocaya was close up through ¬ out and well ridden but could not reach the leader under punishment in the final drive
