iNITIAJ 3rIlSfili TURF3rIlSfili lilvJu RAfF OM vli TURF iUJLil Gold Signet OddsOn Disappoints Over New Grass Course Mrs John D Hertz Saint Accounts for Purse at Arlington Park Time 146 x ARLINGTON HEIGHTS 111 June 29 Chicago followers of the thoroughbred are accustomed to watching horses race over the clay or loam racing strips common in the Midwest This afternoon they were in ¬ troduced to turf racing when Mrs John D Hertz threeyearold Saint won the North Gate Purse over a mile and a sixteenth by three lengths the first offering over the new inner turf course at Arlington Park Hal Price Headleys Panorama was second and the Coldstream Studs Gold Signet was five lengths farther back for third thirdBecause Because Gold Signet seemed to stand out on his recent form the crowd of 5000 made him a prohibitive oddson favorite but when the threeyearold quit on the first turn and lost twelve lengths and dropped back from first place to last most of them de ¬ cided that there are important differences between turf and ordinary racing and it will studyGold have to be given careful study Gold Signet began well at the start in front of the stands and was well in front going into the first turn Unaccustomed to the turf course jockey Westrope could not keep him from going some thirty feet wide however and as Saint moved into first place and Panorama into second Gold Signet dropped back to last Even so Gold Signet began to make up ground and got up to be third turning into the stretch He had been under the whip in the back stretch to make up ground however and did not have enough left to gain on the leaders once they had turned into the stretch stretchThe The race was run in good time 146 with the pace at all stages only slightly slower than in an ordinary race raceD D A Woods Pompoleon proved best of the seven platers meeting at one mile in the sixth race leading home Lady Va Va by a length with Oscillation third Under the direction of Allen Tipton Pompoleon was heavily restrained in the early stages but when called upon he moved between horses and assumed a clear lead in the early part of the stretch However he had to be hard hustled for the remainder of the way to hold Lady Va Va at his heels at the finish Oscillation took third in the final few strides after coming from well back at a loss of ground Continued on t oentyninth page INITIAL RAGE ON TURF Continued from first page The seasoned twoyearold Leonard Wil ¬ son proved too much for the field of six youngsters that came together in the fiye and onehalf furlongs first race Hustled into the lead at the start by Jack Westrope the T C Worden gelding was never headed although he had to be ridden hard in the stretch to hold a half length margin over the Shandon Farms Kissinbug to the finish K E Hitts Monedy was a head back for third thirdThe The victory was Leonard Wilsons fourth in ten starts and he was claimed after the race by the Running W Ranch He had been backed to oddson favoritism favoritismJack Jack Westrope indicated that he intended to have one of his good days by booting home Albert Sabaths fouryearold filly Heiress in the second race a six furlongs claiming affair run in 112 which drew seven sprinting platers Heiress was re ¬ strained off the early pace but moved up stoutly on the outside rounding the stretch turn and although ridden out had the am ¬ ple margin of a length and a half over R C Fishers Polly Diskin at the end The vet ¬ eran Infinity after making all the early pace held on well enough to carry C E Davisons silks to third place a length and a half farther back backLucky Lucky enough to get through on the in ¬ side on the stretch turn Col E R Bradleys Blessed Again closed strongly to beat ten other maiden twoyearold fillies by three quarters of a length in the five furlongs third race Timed in 100 she beat Willis Sharpe Kilmers front running Dinah Vic ¬ tory with Norman Churchs Toro Bang fin ¬ ishing resolutely to be only a head back for third thirdAlthough Although possibly not best of the nine sprinters that faced the barrier in the fourth race over six furlongs the Audley Farms fouryearold Fanfern managed to triumph by a half length over L G Meyers Gift of Roses with George Ogles Merrily On about a length back for third in a driving finish finishApprentice Apprentice C Lamb rode Fanfern and he had the Audley filly off well and lapped on the pacemaking Merrily On from the start Merrily On began to falter entering the stretch and Fanfern moved up outside to take command Meanwhile Arcaro was bringing the well backed Gift of Roses through on the inside but once in the lead Fanfern came in close enough to the rail so that Gift of Roses could not get through Arcaro took Gift of Roses to the outside at the eighth post and was gaining rapidly on the winner at the fjiilsh Fanferns time was 111
