ALL ROWES SURPRISES Gaignard Colorbearer Triumphs in Headliner at Detroit Cuban Eider Fernandez Pilots PilotsDaughter Daughter of Bud Lerner Heros HerosLady Lady Is Disqualified DETROIT Mich June 29 Arthur Gaig nards All Rowes furnished a surprise in1 winning the fifth race which was the prin cipal attraction of an eightrace claiming program offered at the Fair Grounds this i afternoon At the end the fiveyearold daughter of Bud Lerner was slightly more j than a length before H C Rumages The Point which beat Dixianas Genteel Lady I by a length for the second award A small field of seven started but Donna James re j fused to begin with the others j jAlthough Although first in motion The Point soon gave way to Beckoned which raced into the j lead in the run to the turn Genteel Lady was showing the way to the others with Traitor holding third position After reach ing the stretch Genteel Lady disposed of Beckoned but All Rowes which had fol ¬ lowed well back during the first three eighths was making a run on the outside During the final furlong she gradually wore down the leaders and withstood the fast finishing The Point which enjoyed favorit ¬ ism Although Genteel Lady held on gamely to take third Beckoned tired fast and just managed to beat Traitor by a nose for fourth Ridden by F Fernandez a product of Marianao Cuba and carrying the light im j post of 102 pounds All Rowes ran the dis tance in 112 i iAlthough Although a cool breeze swept over the course at the time of the opening of the j program a drizzle that fell after the run ning of the second race made weather con ditions very unpleasant A goodsized crowd j which compared favorably with other Fri day turnouts was on hand for the eightrace f card which was decided over a fast track trackOne One of the outstanding form reversals of the meeting came with the running of the fourth race which engaged a field of ten at six furlongs when H Mcllvains Al Neiman which was backed into favoritism got up to beat the fastfinishing Rye by a head for the winners portion Don Vern was third thirdThe The winner which has shown little of his best form here began first but Tommy Luther saved him when the speedy Le Bruyere and Idle Along went out to show the way After reaching the stretch he gradu ¬ ally wore down the leaders and although he Continued on twentyninth page ALL ROWES SURPRISES Continued from first age disposed of Le Bruyere in the final furlong Luther was forced to put him to a hard drive in withstanding Rye which was forced to come from far back in offering the win ¬ ner his stern challenge challengeAfter After several unsuccessful efforts Walter Ridenours Lanier scored his first victory of the meeting when he was a driving win ¬ ner of the threequarters dash that was fashioned for nonwinning owners Emery was second with Tony Joe third Never far back of the pace during the opening threeeighths the winner took command nearing the final quarter to reach the finish with a lengths margin over Emery which headed Tony Joe for second place Charlie which enjoyed favoritism quit badly after forcing threeeighthsMorsel the pace for threeeighths Morsel a twoyearold stake winner scored his first victory of the year when he was much the best of Triple Threat Gay Bird and seven others that contested the threequarters second race raceTaking Taking command soon after the start the sevenyearold son of Vulcain and Sweet Bun maintained a good lead throughout to have a two lengths advantage at the finish While Triple Threat was second all the way Gay Bird was forced to come from far back to gain third The stanchly supported Shasta Broom was eliminated soon after the start when he unseated jockey C Critch ¬ field The horse came back bleeding at the mouth mouthThe The fifth disqualification of the meeting came with the running of the third race when Heros Lady which beat Bon Champ by a neck was set back for a foul and the latter was given the first award In the new placing Brindle was placed second and Uptodate third thirdOutsprinting Outsprinting her opponents from the start Heros Lady increased her advantage to three lengths in the run to the stretch and when Bon Champ moved up threateningly in the final drive Heros Lady bore over badly Brindle which was never far back got up to beat the tiring Uptodate by a nose noseFernando Fernando Fernandez completed a double when he drove Mrs H Torrientes Little Turtle to the biggest surprise victory of the afternoon when he got up to beat Bright Bubble Polyp and six others at the end of the mile sixth race Outrun for threequar ¬ ters the winner came outside the others after reaching the stretch to beat the fa ¬ vored Bright Bubble in the last stages
