ROUGH RIDING MARS RACE Mountain Elk Victorious Over Balios at Aqueduct Course Pascuma Claims Foul but Stewards Take No Action Pomponius Adds to Earn ¬ ings in Fifth NEW YORK N Y June 29 Mountain Elk from the Ascot Stable came back with a good race at Aqueduct today wlien in a game finish he defeated a band of good platers over the six and a half furlongs distance It was the best offering on a card made up of overnight races and Balios rac ¬ ing for Henry Lingelbach raced into second place with William B Millers Mad Beth saving third from Bubblesome BubblesomeThe The race was marked by considerable rough riding and after the finish Pascuma who had the mount on Balios lodged a claim of foul against the winner This com ¬ plaint was not allowed by the stewards and as a matter of fact there did not seem to have been good reason though his mount had suffered some interference but the win ¬ ner was not to blame blameAn An excessively hot day was made bearable by a breeze that blew over the course and a crowd of good proportions was out while the racing even without a real feature was interesting interestingMad Mad Beth was the one to set the pace Gilbert lost no time in taking the daughter of Mad Hatter to the front and she went along smoothly and under slight restraint Scotch Gold for a time kept with the filly but he soon had enough and then both I Bubblesome and Mountain Elk moved up to do battle battleBubblesome Bubblesome had found his way through while Hunter chose the outside with Moun ¬ tain Elk Balios was back of these but going well while Pascuma had made no move with him Then just as it seemed that Bubblesome would go to Mad Beth Mountain Elk came over slightly and he was pocketed until he had no chance The filly was still racing strongly on her own courage but Mountain Elk steadily wore her down downPascuma Pascuma was making his move with Balios and it was a belated rush when he ran into trouble and had to take up slightly while Mountain Elk went right along to be past the line winner by a head Balios had beaten Mad Beth a head for second place and three lengths back of these came Bubblesome Scotch Gold had quit badly and Follow On the only other starter had been last all the way wayDark Dark Scret continues to come up to his engagement in the Brooklyn Handicap nicely He was sent along for an easy mile in 143 at Aqueduct Friday morning
