SORA CONTINUES WINNING Good Juvenile Scores Fourth Victory of Present Latonia Meeting Element of Luck Enables Smith Colt to toAnnex Annex Castleton Purse In Which Prince PrincePine Pine Suffers at Start LATONIA Ky June 29 Sora the con ¬ sistent twoyearold son of Byrd and Kitty Yansen which races for W E Smith hung up his fourth win of the meeting when he won the Castleton Purse at five and one half furlongs chief attraction on this after ¬ noons card at Latonia Ridden by G Fow ¬ ler Sora defeated Prince Pine Newell and four others covering the distance in 108 An element of luck entered into Soras victory for his chief rival Prince Pine was virtually eliminated shortly after the break Wild Gus rushed up inside going to the turn and was promptly pinched back taking Prince Pine with him But for this bit of misfortune Prince Pine might have given the winner much keener contention As it was the Smith gelding was only able to beat Prince Pine half a length lengthSora Sora which avoided the interference was up among the leaders from the start took command entering the straightaway and held his opponents safe the remainder of the journey journeyLillian Lillian Uhl showed her customary early speed and cut out the pace but after reach ¬ ing the stretch was through and finally finished last After recovering from the interference he suffered Prince Pine closed an immense gap and was running over horses in the stretch to get up for second place beating Newell a neck for that part of the purse The latter pinched off Wild Gus though D Taylor astride Newell could hardly be held to blame blameThe The weather continued unbearably hot and to add to the chagrin of the faithful favorites were beaten with uncanny regu ¬ larity The track was fast fastF F F Brandts Oderic scored his third vic ¬ tory at this meeting when he beat Smear by a nose in the fifth race the second best race on the program The winner led from f lagfall to finish but he had to be hard ridden through the final eighth to hold the fastclosing Smear safe Fair Rochester which was heavily backed his first start in more than a year was third two and one half lehgihs behind Smear and a head in front of Camp Cook CookCamp Camp Cook made a bold rush at the leader in the stretch but tired just as badly after making it and just failed to get into the picture Smear made two challenges at the winner first tackling him on the upper turn dropping back in the stretch and then fin ¬ ishing fast again Spanish Red and Lady Couvin the only other starters had some early speed but tired badly badlyMrs Mrs David Hums Meteoric ably ridden by D Taylor got up in the last few yards to take the first race on the card and score his third victory of the meeting The four yearold a wellbacked favorite won the six furlongs dash by a head from Billies Orphan which put up a sterling performance Royal Sport was third thirdMinnie Minnie Belle owned by L K Rogers and a rank outsider sprung a surprise in win ¬ ning the second race at six furlongs With L Canfield up Minnie Belle making her first start of the meeting made every post a winning one outfinishing the favorite Pharamaid to score by a half length
