HAPPY SCOT DISQUALIFIED j • — Set Back After Finishing Second in Third Race at Rockingham Park. ♦ The Pelican, Recently Claimed by J. D. Mikel, Carries New Owners Colors to Victory in Salem Central Claiming Purse. SALEM, N. H., July 5.— While each of the seven races on todays program at Rockingham Park included the claiming clause, it was interesting sport that the platers furnished, with close and thrilling finishes resulting in the majority of the contests. There was another large week-day crowd out to view the sport, and weather conditions were ideal. A disqualification marred the third race when Happy Scot, after finishing second, was set back. The best field of the afternoon was engaged in tLe Salem Central Claiming Purse, and the winner turned up in The Pelican, racing for J. D. Mikel for the first time, the latter having acquired the Haste gelding via the claiming route in his last appearance under colors. Incidentally, it was The Pelicans second straight success of the meeting. C. J. Meister furnished the one to finish second in Cantersine, and the recent winner, Toytime, earned third for S. W. Labrot. For the first furlong there was not much to choose between The Pelican, Bedight and Cantersine, racing heads apart. Douglas F. was right up with the pace and holding to a position on the rail. It was nearing the turn when the leaders bore over and Lynch had to take up Douglas F. sharply, thereby ruining whatever chances the latter might have had. The Pelican continued with undiminished strides through the stretch and, though the Meister filly made a valiant attempt to cut down the leaders advantage, she was unequal to the task and was beaten a length and a half. The Canter miss enjoyed a like advantage over Toytime for her share of the purse. Zorana, after racing well out of the running until nearing the stretch, came with a rush in the closing furlong to finish in fourth place a length in back of the Labrot three-year-old. Sheldon H. Fairbanks saddled the winner of the second race when he sent out Paper " Continued on third page. HAPPY SCOT DISQUALIFIED Continued from first page. Profits to account for the six furlongs dash over Grace Blotter, Conventional and seven other platers of the cheaper grade. Under the guidance of J. Lynch, the Fairbanks filly was content to remain in second while Grace Blotter was making the running. Twidgets was next in pursuit. Grace Blotter was still in the van as the field swung into the stretch. Lynch came to the outside with the winner, took command before reaching the last sixteenth and drew out fast at the end. Grace Blotter, when pressed, continued along at a steady pace and was well clear of Conventional. The latter had closed an immense lot of ground in the running and was along in the late stages to overtake Twidgets. Devonshire had broken poorly and trailed far out of the content throughout. The first disqualification of the meeting came in the third race, at five and a hall furlongs, when Happy Scot, after finishing second to Par Value, was set back for a stretch foul. Second place was then awarded Zipalong, and Luck In, which had finished fourth, was moved into third place. Fancy Flight had been cutting out the running, closely pressed by Wis Count Par Value had been attending the leaders closely and made his bid when straightened out for the stretch. Happy Scot, after outbreaking his field, dropped back in the first furlong. He then began to improve his position on the outside. Seventy yards from the line Par Value had gained command and Fancy Flight and Wise Count were still heads apart when Happy Scot, coming along on the outside, bore in, bothering both the leaders. Zip along had closed with a rush that enabled him to take third over Luck In in the last stride. Fancy Flight had to be taken up so sharply that, when the finish was reached, he was last of the company.
