BIG CROWD DESPITE HEAT Tuesdays Attendance at Detroit Far Above Expectations. ■ Form Followers Experience Trouble Selecting Winners — Gay Joe Outstanding Disappointment of Afternoon. » DETROIT, Mich., July 24.— With the thermometer reaching its highest mark here this year and an ordinary program, consisting of eight claiming races offered, the crowd at the Fair Grounds this afternoon was far above expectations. Despite the cheapness of the performers, they furnished interesting racing with several finishes in close order, but the crowd that braved the unpleasant weather conditions experienced much trouble in selecting the winners. One of the most prominent offending favorites was Mrs. Klrby Ramseys Gay Joe, which after being installed a 11 to 10 choice in the fifth race, failed to offer any semblance of a real threat and finished in seventh place in the field of eight to start. Winning honors went o J. Oros consistent Annarita, with Minnequa second and Come Seven third and the best of the other three-year-olds. The winner, well handled by L. Dronet, was saved when Moonsan went out to show the way and after the latter had established a long lead in the opening three-eighths Dronet brought the Oros filly to the outside to improve her position. In the run through the stretch Minnequa, which saved ground throughout, wore down Moonsan, but her lead was only momentary, for the winner forged to the front near the final sixteenth to draw away to a two lengths advantage at the end. Minnequa held on gamely to beat the fast-closing Come Seven a neck for the second award. In the concluding furlong Moonsan tired rapidly and finished fourth. With the exception of the opening quarter, where he headed Minnequa for third position, Gay Joe was never a factor. He showed lameness on the way to the post, but did not show it when he returned to the stand after the race. Under 108 pounds, Annarita ran the distance in the slow time of 1:13% and was the second choice in the wagering. Maple Hussy, performing for the first time under the Maple Leaf Stable colors and ridden by F. Fernandez, was a driving winner of the five and a half furlongs first I race. After leading the field of nine maiden youngsters to the final sixteenth, Uptodate was second, with Julia Grant third. Continued on twenty-sixth page. BIG CROWD DESPITE HEAT Continued from first page. Slow to reach her stride and forced to race on the outside, the winning daughter of Traumer and Sun Hussy came with a belated rush that carried her three-quarters of a length before Uptodate. The latter beat Julia Grant three lengths for the second award. Herendeth, which came in for strong support, tired after reaching fourth place midway of the stretch. One of the shortest-priced favorites of the meeting rewarded when B. J. Thurings Hannah Anne was an easy winner of the second race. This, the second event for two-year-olds, engaged ten at five furlongs, with Chero second and Suncircle Blaze third. Taking the lead immediately, the winner sprinted into a two-length advantage in the run to the stretch and increased her margin to three lengths at the finish. While Explorer and Lady Marlboro stopped badly after three-eighths, Chero reached second position near the final quarter and Suncircle Blaze was forced to come from far back to earn the third award.
