! I I KHAMSEEN PROVES BARGAIN 1 Accounts for Third Purse in Mikel Colors at Salem. Rockingham Program Dominated by Platers — Rock Point, Informal and Westys Duke Win. SALEM, N. H., July 24.— J. D. Mikel apparently obtained a rare bargain when he claimed Khamseen from S. W. Labrot for ,500 a couple of weeks ago. The Sir Grey-steel colt scored his third consecutive victory in the Mikel silks. Khamseens latest triumph came in the Salem Center Claiming Purse. This was the best offering on a card given over to the platers and carried a purse of ,000. Chasing the winner past the line, though beaten more than two lengths, the choice, Pennywise, was second. A like distance back Gloritone was third, a wide margin separating her from Vested Power and Aymond was a half dozen lengths farther back in last place. Under the guidance of apprentice T. King, the winner was kept restrained while following the pace of Pennywise. Robertson was restraining Pennywise in front. Gloritone and Vested Power were back of Khamseen as the field sped down the back stretch. Midway on the turn Khamseen was sent up on the outside and was soon out in front. Robertson roused Pennywise in an effort to keep pace with the winner, but was found wanting and Khamseen slowly drew away. Near the stretch the Mikel three-year-old appeared to have lost his chance when he bore out badly, forcing King to strike him across the nose repeatedly. For a time Pennywise gained on the Sir Greysteel colt. King scon had the winner straightened out and Khamseen continued to draw away in the last furlong without need of pressure. Pennywise had given his best, but was no match for the winner, while the others were strung out in Indian file, separated by many lengths. The sport was staged over a fast track under ideal weather conditions. The Heathen lasted to earn a close decision over Periodical in the opener, at six furlongs. This engaged seven from the plater •Tanks. Polyfon was third. Chain had the speed to show the way in the run down the far side of the track. Hughes was steadying the winner along, and when called upon met with little opposition when moving to the front before the next furlong had been covered and he was clear. Polyfon had moved into second place under sufferance, shqwing the way to Chain. Periodical, sluggish in the early running, approaching the stretch was last of the lot. The winner continued to show the way through the stretch, but Sage, after taking Periodical to the outside, managed to get the High Time gelding in his best style. The Heathen was straight as a string at the end but had lasted to triumph by a nose. A consecutive double triumph for the silks ! of J. W. Walter, Jr., came when Charlie j Dawn followed The Heathens victory in j the initial offering by accounting for the second, a dash of five and one-half furlongs. Incidentally, the Carlaris gelding made it two in a row, having won his previous outing. Wax raced into second place, well before Dozana, one that closed an immense gap in the last quarter mile to garner the I show position. Albert Robertson was entrusted with the handling of the winner and was content to I remain in third place until approaching the | stretch. River Rose showed the way until well out of the back stretch, where Wax gained command. River Rose, after relinquishing the lead, dropped back and Wax opened up on his field. A furlong from the finish the Victorian colt was still a length to the good. The Carlaris gelding, taken to the outside, raced along in second place. In the ensuing drive through the closing sixteenth Charlie Dawn gradually forged to the front and entertained a neck advantage at the close. Wax responded gamely when placed under punishment and, though unable to maintain his hold on the lead, was three lengths to the good of the fast-closing Dozana.
