DETROIT Mich July 27 Morsel stakes winner under Leo J Marks colors as a two yearold showed a return to his best form in the fifth race at the Fair Grounds this afternoon when he easily outran a band of five others othersAt At the end of the threequarters dash for members of the claiming ranks under al ¬ lowance conditions the sevenyearold son of Vulcain and Sweet Bun which has a Harold Stakes to his credit enjoyed more than a threelength advantage over H C Hatchs Broadcaster 6 to 5 favorite H R Dickens Chatterdoo was third two lengths in the wake of Broadcaster and a length and a half before Gene D DWith With ideal weather conditions prevailing for the sport a crowd that exceeded any this week was present for the sport which I in most instances was productive of thrill ¬ ing finishes The public again took a drub ¬ bing but several winners were well backed The track was at its best bestKEPT KEPT UNDER PRESSURE PRESSUREThere There was little delay at the start of the fifth with the speedy Home Rule going out to show the way From a slow beginning Gene D reached second place before leav ¬ ing the back stretch and took command when Home Rule tired S Young had Broadcaster in close attendance of the pace and at the end of the halfmile the winner wore down Gene Df which was used up in the early stages stagesDuring During the final threesixteenths however Morsel came on the outside and although he disposed of Broadcaster with ease H Dab son kept after him and Morsel was under pressure at the finish Shuffled back en ¬ tering the stretch Chatterdoo improved his position quickly when clear and was much the best of the tiring Gene D for third thirdUnder Under 112 pounds the top weight of the field Morsel ran the distance in 113 and was wageringOne the second choice in Display was last of the field of eight with Treasure Ship carrying the Smythe positionWhile colors into third position While Divide a son of Vito and Destiny was the first under way Imperial Bob lost little time in taking command and raced into a two lengths lead in the run to the stretch Divide was forcing the pace under steadying restraint but when Sterling Young called upon him he wore Imperial Careful Kitty a slight favorite over Princeton third thirdWhile While Princeton and Two Tricks dom ¬ inated the pace for threeeighths and Care ful Kitty was shuffled back in the final quarter Thistle Ace was forced to come from last place in the closing threeeights to beat Nyack slightly more than a length at the finish The latter also slow to reach his stride and forced to race on the out ¬ side closed with a near determined rush that carried him a half of a length be ¬ fore Careful Kitty at the end After their essays Princeton and Two Tricks retired with the latter finishing in fourth with the winning son of Cherokee and Enga dine taking command soon after the start and leading throughout to have a length and onehalf advantage over Maple Sue at the finish The latter beat the lightly regarded Waterfront by threeequarters of a length for second While the winner Pansy Purple1 and Maple Sue were the best of the others in the run to the final furlong and Waterfront saved ground throughout in earning the minor award Pokeaway which enjoyed fa ¬ voritism was never a factor and after mak ing up ground entering the stretch was not put under pressure in the drive Another mild surprise came withthe run ¬ ning of the fourth race when S E Pershalls Commandman registered his first success of the meeting Eight started for the six fur ¬ longs dash with Lee Gold another lightly regarded finishing second and Onside third thirdFernando Fernando Fernandez had the winner saved back of the pace of Lee Gold until reaching the stretch Calling on the Pershall three yearold Commandman forged to the front near the final furlong to draw out to a three length advantage at the end Slow to begin the stanchlybacked Meloy raced on the in ¬ side throughout but weakened after reach ¬ ing third position in the stretch He came back after the finish with his saddle out of place placeA A nose finish and another surprise came with the running of the sixth race when C E Smiths Manners lasted to beat the fastfinishing Merry Caroline Third went to the favored Blackstrap BlackstrapBlackstrap Blackstrap Manners and Wise Eddie raced head and head to the stretch where Wise Eddie gave way when the winner and Blackstrap drew away After being shuf ¬ fled back on the far turn Merry Caroline came to the outside for room and was wear ¬ ing the winner down at the end
