DOUBLE FOR JOCKEY MERRin Scores Second Victory at Empire City Astride Big Show Pilots Corinne Dailey in Opening Race Platers Dominate Program but Sport SportIs Is Interesting YONKERS N Y July 27 An offday program was down for decision at Empire City this afternoon and there was little in the way of a feature attraction The fourth race which was over one mile and a furlong was designated as the Thornwood Purse and this was for platers Big Show which races for N E Stanton and a pronounced choice in the calculations proved an easy winner over Mrs H Platt ners Flowery while a distant third was Mrs HD Cox Pernickety with Daisaburo in fourth place The winner was ridden by jockey R Merritt and it completed a double for this rider wno nad previously guided home Corinne Dailey the winner of the first race raceWarm Warm weather prevailed and there was no falling off in the attendance The track was at its best and interesting racing devel ¬ oped from the fields dominated by the cheaper grade of platers platersThere There was scant delay at the post in the fourth race and the start was a good one Big Show outran his opponents to the first turn He was rated along steadily and at no stage of the running left the ultimate result in doubt Doorkeeper essayed to keep up in the early stages with Flowery and Pernickety close up while Daisaburo and Garlic were far back of the others On the stretch turn Big Show was steadied along and it was not until the final furlong that he increased his advantage and at the end was under restraint restraintFlowery Flowery which came through on the in ¬ side in the stretch run held on well while Pernickety although quitting from early ef ¬ forts had no trouble in leading home Daisa ¬ buro which showed speed over tired horses in the stretch run runSamuel Samuel Rosoff furnished the winner of the first race and it marked his first score of the meeting when Corinne Dailey led home her opponents after a stretch drive by a length and a half Herman Phillips Jim John was the one to finish in second place while Demonstration from the Warm Stable was third thirdSecond Second Guess one that races for Mrs William Pierson Jr and ridden by C Ros engarten was an easy winner of the second race which was for twoyearolds at five and a half furlongs At the end the gelded son of John P Grier Marvella had a safe margin over Palasa while Folytude was in third place placeJockey Jockey C Rosengarten completed a dou hle when he piloted the Geneseo Stables Gift Magic to a safe victory in the third race of the day This fellow was a receding choice in the calculations disposed of Round O when ready and then held Volo mite and Velociter safe The later two fin ¬ ished second and third respectively The race was under claiming conditions and was for nonwinners since June The start found Round O and Gift Magic showing the way with Volomite on the inside and Velociter on the outside There was no change in running positions to the far turn where Round O dropped back and then Gift Magic went into a safe lead Volomite was sent to the outside of the leaders for the stretch run while Velociter was sent up on the inside insideJust Just Cap ridden by L Chanove and racing for Mrs A S Dodd was a handy winner of the fifth race which was for platers At the finish she led home Baby Chard while Saladin finished fast to beat Infini ¬ tude for the minor portion of the purse The start was delayed for several minutes but when it came Baby Chard was hustled into command She showed the way to In ¬ finitude and Just Cap while Rose Hazen that dropped back at the break was rushed up fast on the inside only to quit turning for home On the stretch turn Just Cap moved up and in the stretch run disposed of Baby Chard and then drew clear clearPro Pro Bono a castoff from the Greentree Stable but now racing for Mrs F Preece and ridden by O Cantara accounted for the final race of the day in a mild stretch drive from St Omer while Stepbrother was in third place The winner worked his way up steadily and finished fast on the outside while St Omer saved ground turning for home homeJockey Jockey Lee Humphries departed for Chi ¬ cago after the runing of the last race to ride Good Gamble in the Arlington Futurity He will return to Saratoga accepting mounts on Monday
