DISCOVERY UNPLACED Dismal Failure in Havre de Grace Handicap, Closing Day Feature. Soman Soldier Decisive Winner, With Where Away Second and Dark Hope Third. i HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., Sept 30. Dis- coyery was a dismal failure today and ! Roman Soldier, ebony coated four-year-old, . which races for Elwood Sachsenmaier, added another important achievement to his turf , prizes when he administered a decisive defeat to seven of the best handicap performers in the East when he accounted for the twenty-fifth running of the Havre de , Grace Handicap; a gallop at one mile and j one-eighth that featured the closing program of the Harford Agricultural Association at the Harford County course today. Surviving 1 a stiff drive after leading the last six i furlongs, the son of Cohort and Miamba 1 added ,050 to his credit and boosted his total money winnings for the season to 1 9,845 when he sped to the conclusion of 1 the journey two lengths in advance of An- 1 thony Pelletcris Where Away, while a similar distance- back J. W. Y. Martins 1 Dark Hope took third in a close finish with Corinto, one of a pair that performed for Mrs. E. Denemark. Discovery, champion : of last season, followed home in advance of 1 Gold Seeker, Roustabout and Finance, the only others to strive for the third important special of the Maryland season. NEVER THREATENS. The big disappointment was the showing of the Vanderbilt colt which, in the estimation of the large crowd on hand, appeared decidedly best in pre-race calculations. He suffered no interference at any stage of the running under the handling of Johnny Bejshak and failed to make any serious charge at any stage of the nine furlongs contest for which he was held at prohibitive odds. Weather conditions, the worst of the meeting, prevailed for the closing day of the sport, but fortunately, a crowd of good size was on hand. With rain falling from an early hour track conditions changed to sloppy condition, but the underfooting was safe and several close finishes were obtained. Two-year-olds of Maryland breeding met for honors in the opening event of the afternoon, and it brought a mild surprise with the running when Fleeting Moon from the Ral Parr barn made every post a winning one to achieve his second score of the season in a drive. He took the measure of Savage, ruling choice, by a length and one-half, while Triple Action from the J. W. Y. Martin barn was third in advance of six others. AT HOME IN GOING. Graduating out of the maiden ranks in his second start, Fleeting Moon was right at home in the soft footing and went into immediate command and, under careful handling by H. Le Blanc, was gifted with enough speed to lead throughout. Savage closed stoutly to take the place by his own length, and Triple Action also made up ground to beat Guy Fawkes for third. The latter two were separated by a neck and were far in advance of the others. The Millsdale Stables silks were seen in another local victory when Grey Streak turned back Mrs. E. Denemarks Flavor, L. H. Miners Acautaw, and nine other better than average sprinters that met in the second race over the three-quarters distance. Neglected in the wagering to make the running for the better part of the journey, the four-year-old Pompey gelding reached the end to win by one length, while Flavor had little difficulty in beating the L. H. Miner sprinter, which waged a stirring argument to land third from Masked Gal. One of the biggest disappointments of the meeting came in the third race when Alfred G. Vanderbilts Purple Knight proved a dismal failure. Going to the post a short-priced favorite, he cut little figure in the running to finish eighth. Winning honors fell to E. J. Regans Aladdins Dream, and it was by a short margin that he captured honors from A. Pelleteris South Gallant, with third taken by W. Elliotts Xandra. South Gallant made the early running and appeared a certain winner when she swung into the front lane leading by a three-length margin. She shortened strides badly and fell prey to Aladdins Dream, which came from last position to register by a half length. There was no excuse for Purple Knights showing, although there was persistent rumors before the running that he was unsound. This, however, did not obtain, as he pulled up in good fash-Ion. THREE IN A ROW. Ten middle distance performers engaged in the grade "C" handicap that served as the co-feature of the afternoon, and it gave Moon Side, of the E. Kane barn, his third consecutive victory of the meeting when he , led the entire journey to score in a drive. , Overlooked in the speculation, he reached the end gamely, holding to a clear advantage over Scatter Brain, from the A. C. Rose barn, , which landed second position by a nose, while Count Me, from the Mrs. E. Denemark ; stable, racing coupled with Chasar, was i easily third. I L. Coffman had the mount on the Kane J colorbearer and lost no time before sending ; f the Broadside gelding into the lead. Steadied ; along in the early part of the journey to i meet contention from Count Rae, he readily . withstood the bids of the Denemark colt ; after they went along well in advance of the . others, then under a strong ride nearing the : close swept over the line winner by a length i and one-half.
