Purse run here late this afternoon the only possible stumbling block for a few of the candidates a field of from sixteen to twenty starters was indicated for Saturdays sixtythird running of the 50000 added Ken ¬ tucky Derby The arrival from New York of Melodist whose Wood Memorial Stakes victory established him as a formidable threat placed all of the probable starters on the grounds at Churchill Downs where the famous fixture is staged annually annuallyAs As the long rigorous training grind nears an end four of the intended contestants were put through trials this morning leav ¬ ing Pompoon Clodion Merry Maker Sir Damion Heelfly and Melodist to conclude their stiffer preparation and the majority of them will be set down for such training gallops tomorrow tomorrowIn In addition to those already mentioned probable starters Saturday include War Ad ¬ miral the probable choice Reaping Reward Military Fairy Hill Court Scandal Dellor Sceneshifter Billionaire Grey Gold Sunset Trail II No Sir Burning Star Bernard F and Fencing Two others Gerald and Main Man today were listed as doubtful con ¬ testants though neither had been declared out officially officiallyMelodist Melodist last of the invaders to reach the Downs arrived at the track after an un ¬ eventful journey from Jamaica and was reported in good condition as he detrained shortly before noon Trained by James Fitz Continued in normal condition again His trainer Willie Shea did not look for the short illness to interfere with the colts training or starting in the Derby DerbyRain Rain which has fallen almost daily here for the past fortnight whipped back to make conditions for training this morning unpleasant though the track was good Braving the wet weather Samuel D Rid ¬ dles War Admiral William DuPont Jrs Fairy Hill Chesapeake Stakes victory sky ¬ rocketed him to the position of favorite rounded out his training with another workout that aroused much favorable com ¬ ment when he breezed the full Derby route of a mile and a quarter in 208 Unpaced the Glen Riddle aspirant cut through the rain at a very easy pace for a mile and then closed the workout with a fast quar ¬ ter considering the manner in which he was running He was timed in 142 for the first mile and the subsequent quarter in 26 Earlier fractions were 24 for the quarter 50 for the halfmile and 115 for the threequarters threequartersTrainer Trainer George Conway who is with the Riddle horse constantly could not hide his satisfaction over the workout while scores of horsemen agreed he will be the horse to beat in the Derby DerbyShading Shading War Admirals time but not going quite so easily Fairy Hill the hope of William DuPont Jr went the same dis ¬ tance in 208 but the Messenger gelding was asked for higher speed during the fore ¬ part of his rehearsal and also had a slight disadvantage when trainer R E Handlen started him at the furlong post The Dela ¬ ware threeyearold ran the opening quar ¬ ter in 24 and completed four furlongs in 48 Running the next quarter in 26 he completed six furlongs in 114 and another quarter in 26 returning him to the starting point in 140 140Overnight Overnight Fairy Hill was an entry in the Trial Purse but with rain threatening to bring about a muddy track Handlen decided to withdraw him from the race and conclude his training with a private work while the track was firm The move was eminently
