i THREEYEAROLD PROSPECTS OF 1937 I MATEY chestnut colt by Man of War Tavy by St Germans prop ¬ erty of Walter M Jeffords Not eligible for the Kentucky Derby but has been named for the Preakness for which race he is being beingI pointed pointedBy I By NOBBIS BOYDEN Preston Burch is training for Walter M Jeffords a chestnut son of Man o War and JTavy by St Germans named Matey which must be considered one of the outstanding pjospects for threeyearold stardom Of nine starts last season Matey is credited with hree victories the most important of which he gained through a disqualification but e holds great promise just the same sameIn In his last start of the season Matey ran Privileged to a nose in the Pimlico Futurity Futurityut ut was awarded first money when the Calumet Farm colt was set back the stewards stewardsfinding finding him guilty of interfering with the Jeffords colt right at the end and with other otherlorses lorses earlier in the race Consequently Matey has to his credit one of the outstanding outstandingrwoyearold rwoyearold events on the American racing calendar Matey began racing in May at Belmont Park and but for gaining experience he Would have done just as well to have remained in the barn In his two starts over the Straight course he was beaten fifteen lengths each time The fields were composed of promising maidens maidensTrainer Trainer Burch put Matey away until the fall meeting at Aqueduct in the first of which he went unplaced to Zostera Night Bud and other likely maidens A few days later the Man o War colt showed speed for the first time but he happened to take on Moonton when that speedy colt was bent for graduation and had to be content with second honors Moonton beat him four lengths in running the five furlongs in 59 Matey tried again in a maiden event over the straight course at Belmont but he finished well back as Clodion proved the winner The sixth outing for the Jeffords colt was at Laurel in the middle of the meeting and It gave him the first chance to race around a turn He was among the trailers of the dozen starters in the early stages of the race but gained steadily through the final three furlongs to finish third beaten two lengths by Prairie Dog 1 This effort prompted him to be made favorite in his next four days later In another six furlongs dash in which he was opposed by eleven other nonwinners He again had to come from behind but showing more speed he was able to race into the lead after passing the furlong pole to score by four lengths over Gerald as Gold Flag was third and Grey Gold fourth Called upon to go a mile and seventy yards in his next performance at Laurel in vhich he was held at oddson Matey was able to follow the early pace in a reasonably close position and then to take command in handy fashion soon after the field reached the stretch He won with considerable left by two and a half lengths over Siam as Mr jCanron was third In the Pimlico Futurity at a mile and onesixteenth Matey was far back among the ten starters until the final three furlongs but he gained fast enough to reach third place at the eighth pole He gained steadily on Privileged in the remaining distance put the two horses swerved toward each other right at the wire Nevertheless that effort as well as his other winning races showed Matey to have a natural inclination for distance running which should stand him in good stead this season seasonHe He is a smooth and solid colt of ample size His sire Man o War requires no Introduction while his dam was by St Germans sire of such stayers as Twenty Grand j3old Venture and St Brideaux Mateys second dam was by Watercress and the third was Hamburg Belle winner of the Futurity Matey therefore is well equipped in all respects to prove successful in top flight threeyearold racing which the writer believes he will do Spendthrift T AustralianAerolite Australian Hastings Aerolite Cinderella tBIue Ruin i Manna Bend Or Doncastcr FairyGold Rouge Rose RoseGalliard Dame Masham Galliard it Pauline Sainfoin Springfield SpringfieldSanda js fRockSand Sanda SandaSt Roqucbrune St Simon St Marguerite Merry Hampton If Hampton HamptonDoll Merry Token Doll Tearsheet Mispah MacGregor 1 Underhand mare rJohn o Gaunt f Isinglass Swynford La Fleche Canterbury Pilgrim Tristan 1 Pilgrimage U o Torpoint i C Trenton V Doncaster Beauty JMaid of the Mist Cyllene il Sceptre r Springfield jf St Albans Watercress V Viridis Wharfdale j Hermit 1 Bonnie Doon Hamburg jf Hanover Hamburg Belle Lady Reel Isiac Rosebery ti Isis fOr Tomahawk
