READYFORPREAKNESS STAKES Flying Scot Demonstrates His Speed in Amber jack Purse Dominates Jamaica Feature and Wins x Easily Jockey Eddie Arcaro Astride Two Winners JAMAICA N T May 4 John Hay Whit ¬ neys Flying Scot qualified to some extent for engagement in the Preakness Stakes when he was an easy winner of the Amber jack Purse at Jamaica today Taking an early lead the son of The Porter dominated the race and was going away at the end in a fashion to suggest a readiness for the one mile and threesixteenths Maryland Jockey Club prize Mrs John Hertz Count Atlas was the one to race to second place and he was doing his best to lead home William Woodwards Riparian and Early Settler was fourth fourthAnother Another delightful day brought out a big crowd and the racing was first class al ¬ though there were only two of the events that were not written under claiming con ¬ ditions ditionsSOME SOME INTERFERENCE INTERFERENCEThere There was some interference going to the first turn in the Amberjack Purse when Riparian carried Flying Scot out badly and as Arcaro came in Zostera and Devils Pace both suffered some interference When the back stretch was reached Flying Scot read ¬ ily drew into a good lead and Arcaro took hold of his head to rate him along in that position Count Atlas had slipped through on the first turn and was in second place and then came Riparian and Zostera on the outside Devils Pace after her mis fortunes on the turn was unable to find her stride and was far back of the leaders leadersDown Down the back stretch Stout roused Ri ¬ parian in an effort to catch Flying Scot but Arcaro had only to ease his pull on the son of The Porter to hold his lead and after turning from the straight he drew away slightly Count Atlas was coming again and slipped through to be in second place but he had no chance to catch Flying Scot t In the stretch the Whitney colt continued to draw away until his winning margin was six lengths Count Atlas hung on gamely to beat Riparian half a length for second place and Early Settler had gained some ground to be third thirdThis This marked a riding double for Arcaro for he had scored with Sgt Byrne in the second best race of the afternoon afternoonSGT SGT BYRNES FIRST FIRSTJohn John Simonettis Sgt Byrne which has been racing with the best sprinters at the meeting beginning with the Paumonok Hand ¬ icap on opening day won his first race of the year when he scored in the six furlongs Morvich Handicap He prevailed with plenty to spare when the winning margin was three lengths over Philip Biebers Chancing which in turn beat William Woodwards Isolator by four lengths for second place The only other starter was Conte ConteWhile While the fiveyearold son of Stimulus ran a good race when he went the distance in 111 he Jeft in motion and though Chancing also was off to a flying start Isolator was away badly and Conte was almost left at the post With the advantage at the start Sgt Byrne and Chancing soon had opened up a long lead and they raced closely lapped until Sgt Byrne finally made the son of Chance Play give way Then he came on to his comparatively easy score scoreIsolater Isolater was always third while Conte left the post so slowly that it really amounted trfa twohorse race by reason of the poor start
