MOLASSES BOB WINS IN DRIVE Defeats Flying D ere by a Neck in inThorncliffe Thorncliffe Feature Offering Large Crowd Present TORONTO Ont June 2 A crowd of more than 8000 greeted the thoroughbreds for the second day of the Thorncliffe Park meeting when the management presented the first Ladies Day of the local season Ideal weather conditions prevailed with a slight drop in temperature and the track was at its best The program was entirely given over to the ranks of the claiming platers with the fifth event featured as the Sweet Caporal Cigarette Purse in which a blanket was presented to the winning owner by George H Muntch local representative of the Imperial Tobacco Company CompanyMolasses Molasses Bob in the silks of the Med way Stable of J E Smallman proved best in the feature when he drove to the end of the mile and onesixteenth to defeat the Cosgrave Stables Flying Dere by a neck Penrill a recent acquisition to the A J Hal liwell Stable came from well back in thrilling fashion to take third place two lengths back and a half length before J H Blacks Mind reader Molasses Bob was well handled by G Courtney and raced the distance in 147 147From From the start the field left in perfect order and Play Book which held the inner position raced into command followed by Molasses Bob and Flying Dere with Fez in fourth position As they straightened away in the back stretch Molasses Bob moved for ¬ ward on the outside and took the lead when the halfmile post was reached He held a length lead with Play Book in second place a head before Flying Dere Rounding the lower turn Courtney sent the Medway color bearer clear and Play Book began shorten ¬ ing stride and dropped back Mindreader advanced into third place Midway of the stretch Molasses Bob still had a clear lead but Flying Dere began to overtake him and Penrill had moved to fourth position In the drive through the final sixteenth Court ¬ ney was forced to shake the Challenger II I colt up sharply and managed to stall off Flying Dere to have a neck margin at the end Flying Dere was rapidly overhauling the winner while Penrill had closed stoutly to outfinish Mindreader for third position two length back
