DAWN PLAY WINS OAKS King Ranch Filly Earns 10575 by Belmont Victory Daughter of Clock Tower Easily EasilyOutruns Outruns Favored Drawbridge Dead Heat in Final NEW YORK N Y June 2 Dawn Play the sturdy daughter of Clock Tower and Gun Play that carries the silks of R J Kleebergs King Ranch was an easy winner of the rich Coaching Club American Oaks at Belmont Park today duplicating her re ¬ cent victory in the Acorn Stakes The re ¬ newal carried a net value of 10575 to the winner and it was Drawbridge from the Wheatley Stable of Mrs H C Phipps and Ogden Mills that took second place from Walter M Jeffords Rouge et Noir a light ¬ weight of the party Far back of the St Germans filly John Hay Whitneys Royal Raiment was fourth and then followed Bon ¬ nie Clabber and Sweet Desire the only other starters startersThis This was the midweek event that brought out a big crowd and conditions were ideal for the running The victory was an im ¬ pressive one and it indicated that Dawn Play has been brought back to her best form by Max Hirsch Never far from the pace she readily outgatried Drawbridge to win with ease by five lengths while Drawbridge which was the choice had saved second place from Rouge et Noir by two lengths Royal Raiment was ten lengths back and it was evident that the mile and three fur ¬ longs was far beyond her powers powersGOOD GOOD START With little delay at the post the start was a good one and Royal Raiment went out to show the way and was soon under re ¬ straint and just heading Drawbridge Dawn Play was three lengths back of the Wheat ley miss and Bonnie Clabber was showing the way to Rouge et Noir and Sweet De ¬ sire at once dropped back and plainly did not belong in such company companyGilbert Gilbert nursed Royal Raiment along clev ¬ erly but before the run through the back stretch had been completed Drawbridge had moved away from her to open up a lead of two lengths and she was galloping well within herself As Longden moved on Draw ¬ bridge Balaski shook up Dawn Play and moved into second place while Royal Rai ¬ ment continued to drop back badly and Rouge et Noir was making up some ground groundThis This was the order when the stretch was reached but Dawn Play was galloping strongly back of Drawbridge and a furlong out she was alongside the daughter of Sir Gallahad III and raced past to gallop home an easy winner Rouge et Noir was too far back to run down the favorite but she continued to gain ground until she was I only beaten a couple of lengths for the place placeThere There have been better fillies raced for the Coaching Club American Oaks but it is probable that Dawn Play would have been a good one in any year yearKLEEBERGS KLEEBERGS RECEIVE TROPHY TROPHYAfter After the finish Mr Kleeberg and his little daughter were presented with trophies which were a valued part of the prize The presentation was made by Reginald Rives former president of the Horse Show Asso ¬ ciation ciationThe The second four and a half furlong dash for juvenile maidens brought a rare finish that demanded a photograph to make the decision when William Zeigler Jrs En ¬ chanted William F Hitts Spring Meadow and Mrs Willis Sharpe Kilmers Lucky Omen crossed the line closely locked in the order named and six lengths before Stephen Jay the one to finish fourth fourthThe The fifth race was marked by both rough and foolish riding and Peters made no mis ¬ takes to have George A Garretts Carnarvon home the winner winnerThis This running brought a disqualification when Orient Express which appeared to be one of the sufferers was disqualified from third place when he followed Advocator over the line It appeared that Advocator was the offender and Orient Express the one that suffered in the rough riding ridingA A dead heat between Challephen from the Branncastle Stable and Mrs W M Jeffords Commonwealth marked the running of the final race of the day The two finished on even terms according to the camera picture with Challephen on the inside Conquer was a close third The riding honors were shared between Renick on the Branncastle starter and McDermott astride the Jeffords star
