RIOT AT THORNCLIFFE PARK False Start and Rerunning of Sec ¬ ond Kace Causes Trouble Jockeys Pelted With Mud and Stones and andRaces Races Delayed Two and OneHalf Hours HoursDeputize Deputize Stable Help TORONTO Ont June 5 A scene unpre ¬ cedented in Canadian race track history took place at Thorncliffe Park Saturday afternoon when a great number of the big gathering vigorously protested the action of the stewards in ordering the rerunning of the second race declaring the first a false break Hundreds of irate fans swarmed onto the track after the rerunning of the event won by the extreme outsider Lassies Mary and the demonstration had gathered such force by the time the horses appeared on the track for the third race that it was little short of a riot riotThe The riders and horses were pelted with dirt and stones being forced to dismount and seek shelter in the paddock and the milling throng of maddened bettors would not permit the sport to proceed nor allow general manager Wobllatt opportunity to explain the circumstances over the loud speaker equipment equipmentFALSE FALSE START STARTThe The field was entering the stalls when the false break came probably through a me ¬ chanical defect the bell sounded and all but Lassies Mary and Creme De Menthe swung into action The recall man maintains he waved them back but all but the two that had been left at the gate continued on their way Vanished lasting long enough to gain a half length verdict over Big One which was a nose before Tea Jester JesterThen Then the field was ordered back to the starting point and the trouble began Evi ¬ dently under the impression that it had been a race the track employees were on the course with their harrows and had to move quickly to get off when the field got under way in the rerunning of the race This time the two that had failed to figure in the first contest had matters all to themselves and Lassies Mary scored easily over Creme De Menthe while Mueller one that had been far back in the false race finished third thirdUndoubtedly Undoubtedly the fact that this race fig ¬ ured in the Daily Double aggravated the situation Lassies Mary paid 16045 to win and the Double payoff on Ceallaigh and Lassies Mary was 354225 354225An An attempt was made to send the horses to the post on schedule for the third race but the crowd was getting really out of hand by this time and there was much throwing of stones and dirt loud booing of the officials and some of the extremists at ¬ tempted to molest the horses and riders and fights were breaking out here there and everywhere It was indeed the most regret ¬ table scene ever witnessed on a Canadian race track trackRIDERS RIDERS DISMOUNT DISMOUNTThe The horses were jogged down the stretch and the riders dismounted but as time went on and there was no pacifying the disturbers the horses were returned to the paddock paddockWarden Warden McDonald took his turn at the loud speaker and in the name of the law ordered those on the track proper to get of f but was met with a storm of abuse and a de ¬ cided refusal to obey the commands of the law despite his threat of police action Crowds milled into the mutuel department demanding a rebate rebateWarden Warden McDonald was forced to the ex ¬ pediency of swearing in all the stable help and every man available as special deputies to clear the track and mutuel department by force forceAfter After a delay of about two and onehalf hours the track was cleared by a body of deputies sworn in by Chief Faulds of the York Township police policeAn An announcement made by the manage ¬ ment moved post time up for the remaining events to every twenty minutes
