Here and There on the Turf War Admiral Among Topnotch ers ersInjury Injury Troublesome Only Near End EndPompoons Pompoons Performance Dis ¬ appointing appointingSceneshifters Sceneshifters Effort Credit ¬ able In winning the Belmont Stakes with one of the finest and most impressive perform ¬ ances ever given by a thoroughbred War Admiral not only shattered all vestige of doubt that he is the champion threeyear old but he established himself as a good horse perhaps a great one His name hence ¬ forth necessarily must be associated with those of Equipoise Discovery Blue Lark ¬ spur Gallant Fox Reigh Count Sun Beau Crusader Cavalcade and the other brilliant horses since the time of Man o War That he is the best son of Man o War the writer will state with the reservation that he did not see Crusader in action Certainly no horse in recent years has smothered his op ¬ position as War Admiral has done in his five starts of the season and he accomplished th task in much easier fashion in the Belmont because it was easily his best effort so far farSo So eager to get away from his outside position at the start that he stumbled for two or three strides the Glen Riddle colt overcame this trouble an instant later to rush into command When clear approach ¬ ing the lower turn he was guided to the inner rail by Charles Kurtsinger and was never more than a few feet away from the fence for the remainder of the journey De ¬ spite steady xestraint from Kurtsinger War Admiral stepped the first two quarters in 24 each the third in 24 and the fourth and fifth quarters in 25 each This pace brought him to the end of the mile and onequarter in 202 which had his rivals groggy Through the stretch until inside the furlong pole Kurtsinger rode with pushing hands but then he eased the tension and in the final fifty yards he began taking up the Admiral When this was done the brown colt broke stride which caused him to go in a choppy manner while being eased up Ridden out he would have broken Handy Mandys American record of 228 for the mile and onehalf instead of just equalling it The injury suffered by War Admiral when he grabbed the quarter of his right front foot as he stumbled at the start probably had no effect on his performance one way or the other until right at the end when Kurtsinger was easing him up In the heat of the race it is inconceivable that what eVer pain was caused by the cut went un ¬ noticed by the colt although there was ho doubt but what he knew about it after ward If the wound heals in proper fashion the Mano1 War colt should be able to re ¬ sume exercige under saddle within a week i Continued on fifteenth page HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second pageJ or so but trainer George Conway can be expected not to take any chances with him so War Admiral likely will be out of com ¬ petition at least through the greater part of the month passing up possible engagements in the Latonia and American Derbys the Kent Handicap and Dwyer Stakes His next outing probably will be the Arlington Clas ¬ sic but Conway will offer no comment on the matter one way or the other until he sees how the injury heals healsOutside Outside of War Admirals brilliant per ¬ formance the most noticeable angle of the Belmont running was the utter failure of Pompoon Harry Richards had him under strong restraint well back of the pace for nearly a mile Pompoon and Brooklyn began to move at the first turn with the former going the easier Under a drive around the second turn the son of Pompey moved up gradually being fourth turning into the stretch Then he was through and the finish found him in sixth position eighteen lengths back of War Admiral whereas in the Ken ¬ tucky Derby he was less than two lengths away and in the Preakness only a head His effort suggested that Pompoon wasnt right and it will not be surprising if a vacation is ordered for him He went into the race with the least amount of training caused by the injury suffered just prior to the Preakness which prevented him from in ¬ dulging in a workout for ten days after that engagement engagementIn In finishing second in the Belmont Scene shifter at least showed himself to have stake capabilities and he should land one of the important threeyearold races before the season is out With clear room all the way the son of Sickle and Stagecraft moved into second place in the back stretch and went willingly all the way although he at no time was able to menace War Ad ¬ miral At the windup he was well before the others being ten lengths in advance of Vamoose The Falaise Stable colt went evenly all the way and was not troubled in gaining third honors when the others failed to challenge His connections now know more about the son of Blue Larkspur than they did before Brooklyn was under pres ¬ sure all through the finalsix furlongs but the race may do him much good Flying Scot tired after a mile while Melodist was unable to respond at any time
