DISASTROUS ME AT OMAHA r LTwo Men and Approximately Forty Horses Lose Their Lives Property Damage Estimated at 200000 Numerous Men and Horses Among Amongthe the Injured OMAHA Neb June 7 Two men are dead and several seriously injured and more than two score of horses burned to death as a result of a disastrous fire which occurred at AkSarBen Field Sunday afternoon The men whose lives were snuffed out were Travis Tex Lochlear trainer of the horses of the Reynolds Brothers and Edward Kelley a groom in the employ of D Huff HuffAmong Among the horses lost were five from the sixhorse stable of D Christian and four from the sixhorse Peacock Stable The Peacock Stable arrived from Chicago Satur ¬ day dayScenes Scenes to make ones blood run cold were witnessed soon after the fire started early Sunday afternoon Fifty or more horses stampeding through the AkSarBen park ¬ ing spaces like a herd of wild animals run ¬ ning over or hurdling automobile fences and anything in their path Owners train ¬ ers and grooms risking their lives to save the horses thoroughbreds whinnying with fear of the unknown and all the while the gigantic 200horse barn a mass of flames and burning like a tinderbox tinderboxFIRE FIRE SPREADS QUICKLY QUICKLYThe The fire started about 215 p m So quickly did it spread due to a heavy wind the building was levelled and was a mass of ruins within an hour hourAbout About 200 thoroughbreds show horses and polo ponies were stabled in the barn which was not an ordinary horse stable but more on the order of the big horse buildings seen at fairs A checkup revealed that 103 thoroughbreds were in the building They were spread all over the countryside late Sunday night nightA A herd of ten was captured near an amusement park several miles from the track A few were rounded up on the down ¬ town streets of Omaha while some were discovered more than ten miles from the scene of the blaze blazeMany Many horses are still missing and until a list can be checked and the horses identi ¬ fied it will not be definitely known which animals perished or were seriously injured and those saved Owner Dave Christian stated that he saved only Donnacona Kid losing Schuie Texas Pal Lady Peenzie Kid ¬ die and Hustle Away Among the more prominent horses in the barn were Col Goodnight winner of Saturdays handicap and Nervous Lady Swifty Josephine D Barrette Rainy Day Jack Murphy and Square Dance all winners at the meeting meetingTom Tom Walsh Jr Omaha sportsman lost Flashing Genius a prize show horse valued at 25000 25000HEROIC HEROIC DEEDS DEEDSSome Some heroic deeds were enacted at the height of the conflagration Tex Loch ¬ lear lost his life because he attempted to rescue the horses in his care Clyde Baley a groom was saved from death when after rushing from the building a human torch he was seized by an Omaha man and thrown bodily into a big tunnel of mud and water Gregory Kennedy suffered injuries while leading horses from the building He was struck by a falling beam One groom led two hrses to the outside of the building only to have them break loose and dash back into the mass of flames flamesDespite Despite the fact a number of horses en ¬ tered for Mondays races were dead or in ¬ jured no substitute races were put on Among the horses slated to run today but are dead are Tyban Julia R Schuie and Nprthcutt Tnose injured are Belvalou Dimock Phyllis C and Donnacona Kid KidIt It is estimated that the loss incurred through the destruction of the building and horseflesh would amount to almost 200000 When a complete checkup has been made by the track officials a full li of the dead arid injured horses will be made public
