BOCERT SCORES IN CLASS D Shoulder Arms Finishes Second in Pound Ridge Purse Empire City Track Is Rated Slow but butImproving Improving Weather Pleasant and andAttendance Attendance Shows Increase NEW YORK N Y July 25 Although he picked up three pounds of his halflength victory on July 11 increasing his weight to 110 pounds the Mill River Stables Bogert a faststepping and courageous threeyearold dark chestnut son of Gino and Sun Patica j Paticaj by Sun Briar had no trouble winning the class D Pound Ridge Handicap which was wasoffered offered as the fifth and banner race today at Empire City He did more really for in his triumph earlier in the month he went five and threequarters furlongs in I09v5 Today he came to the wire a length and a half to the good in 109 109I I The second portion of the Pound Ridge Purse went to the Longchamps Shoulder Shoulderj j Arms which raced under 117 pounds Deep 1 End representing the Paragon Stables and carrying high weight 122 pounds ran third and Ken Klings Play Gold the lightweight under 107 pounds fourth Deep End a 13 to5 choice was the favorite in the fivehorse field while Bogert at 9 to 2 was the out side sideTRACK TRACK IMPROVES RAPIDLY RAPIDLYWith With weather a great deal more pleasant today than it was on Monday the attend ance took a jump to around 7200 At the 1 start of racing the track was rated slow but it improved rapidly under a warm sun un ¬ til at post time for the feature it was fast j In the fourth event Empire Citys patrons got their first glance at a youngster from the Edward Riley Bradley stable about which many complimentary things were said early in the season The horse in question is Boss Hoss a brown son of Black Servant and Blossom Time by North Star III mak ¬ ing him a full brother to the mighty Blue Larkspur This youngster raced greenly 1 after breaking rather sluggishly made up a lot of ground near the end of the back 1 stretch and around the turn but was unable to gain much ground in the stretch and wound up third to Snow Ridge and Equi stone stoneI I Still a bit green but a nicestriding 1 youngster Boss Hoss is going to have to do I considerable improving before he can be re garded as even half as good as his illustrious brother brotherHAAS HAAS GOOD RIDING Leon Buddy Haas who scored in the fourth with Snow Ridge piloted Bogert to his score in the Pound Ridge putting up sterling rides on both horses He broke Bogert alertly but not fast enough to keep him near Shoulder Arms The latter acted badly in his stall and was made to break from the outside two lengths back In mo ¬ tion when the go signal was given Shoul ¬ der Arms had no trouble sprinting to the top in a trice Haas took a good hold of Bogert and lay in second place to the top of the stretch stretchShoulder Shoulder Arms enjoyed a tnreelengtn tnreelengtnlead lead in the first eighth and gained a length lengthin in the next Then Bogert began closing in inon on him and at the eighth post went easily 1 to the front From that point to the judges judgeshe he drew away Shoulder Arms under hard hardur ur nn lasted to be second by a neck over overDeep Deep End The latter fourth in the first firstquarter quarter and last at the top of the stretch stretchmade made up considerable ground and was hard 1 charging to be third A length behind him in fourth place was Play Gold Rock Maker MakerI I third in the first half mile tired badly in inthe the final sixteenth and finished last
