DOUBLE DISQUALIFlCfflfi METED OUT AT CRETE ILLINOIS HORSE RACING BOARD MEMBERS NAMED ONIG AND BRONZE BUGLE SET BACK FOR FOULING FOULINGUnusual Unusual Ruling Takes Place in Third Race Latepass Awarded Purse Jockey Adams Suspended SuspendedCRETE CRETE 111 June 12 In one of the most unusual rulings in the history of racing in this country the stewards of the Lincoln Fields Jockey Club disqualified the first two horses to cross the finish line in the third race obviously for fouling several horses in the field while moving to the front to contest the issue through the stretch after leaving the eighth post The horses who finished first and second respectively only to have their numbers taken down were Mrs James E Waters Onig and W E Horns Bronze Bugle The ruling moved Mrs Milton Riesers Latepass up into first money Mrs Earl Kelleys Gold Mesh into second Lexbrook Stables Pelter to third and G L Scallons Maebob to fourth fourthBefore Before announcing their ruling the stew ¬ ards did not post the numbers of the finish as is customary but sent for the three riders Johnny Adams who rode Onig Kenneth Greever who rode Bronze Bugle and Doug MacAndrew who rode Pelter and ques ¬ tioned them before announcing the official decision decisionLater Later the stewards issued the following ruling rulingJockey Jockey J Adams is suspended for the remainder of the meeting for rough riding Onig and Bronze Bugle who finished first and second respectively are disqualified for interference Jockey Kenneth Greever is held blameless By order of the stewards stewardsGreever Greever was absolved of blame when he stated that Onig had carried his mount in inBIG BIG DOUBLE NULLIFIED NULLIFIEDBy By disqualifying Onig the stewards nulli ¬ fied a Daily Double which would have brought a return of 1410 to those who had combined that son of Gino with L J Caillou ettes Royal One winner of the second race Had they taken down Onigs number and moved up Bronze Bugle instead of also dis ¬ qualifying him the Daily Double would have returned 112860 to those who had combined that horse with Royal One OneA A series of fouls in the race took place when Onig bore in while coming with a rush in the stretch after moving from far back inside the last quarter Bronze Bugle was right with him on the inside At the finish Onig was only a neck in advance of Bronza Bugle Latepass who almost went to his knees when suffering interference was only a length and onequarter away in third place and a neck in advance of the favored Gold Mesh The latter was in front when Onig and Bronze Bugle started 5740 to place Well backed My Myri was worth 340 to those who played her to show showOf Of the 140 disqualifications made during 1940 and listed in the American Racing Manual only one vas at all similar to that which was made at Lincoln Fields today That was when the Saratoga stewards dis ¬ qualified Key Ring after that horse had finished in a dead heat with Tangled in the Astoria Stakes at the Spa In overhauling Tangled Key Ring had interfered with Mae mante disqualifiedLittle for which foul she was disqualified Little realizing that they were witnessing something which had never happened in this country before the crowd accepted the decision without a murmur which was all the more remarkable when it is considered that a goodly number of racing fans were in attendance to take advantage of the pleasant weather which followed the recent storms and witness the afternoons sport sportANOTHER ANOTHER CLAIM OF FOUL FOULAnother Another claim of foul was made against Adams after he had won the fifth race with Mrs G H Emicks Book Plate Steve Brooks who had finished second on B P Woodsons Leading Article made the claim of interference but it was not allowed Mrs L B Muschals Cherry Trifle picked up the show award in this sixfurlong event in ad ¬ vance of Mrs W R Reids Aljack The winning Cohort gelding paid 1140 in the mutuels after accomplishing his first score of the year yearRunning Running out at the head of the stretch while in front the Rosedale Stables Happy Choice still managed to dispose of the Lex brook Stables Mexicana and account for the fourth race in comparatively easy fash ¬ ion Well backed in the wagering the Peace Chance filly paid 880 to those who sup ¬ ported her as she annexed the second purse of her career Mexicana led Mrs Monte Weils Gypsy Monarch to the wire while LC and W Sears Miss Grief was fourth as the winner completed the mile in 145 over the heavy racing strip The useful fouryearold Jock gelding Fritz owned by O A Boeckly of Latonia accounted for his second purse in four starts during the meeting when he finished in front in the sixfurlong introductory race The Kentucky gelding ridden by Ty Meloche and well supported in the pari mutuels weakened badly after appearing an easy winner a furlong from the finish but aided by strong handling managed to labor home a neck in the van of Chanting with Mr Smith a similar margin farther back Arched who was installed favorite finished fourth after engaging Fritz for the lead the first half mile of the distance distanceJohnny Johnny Adams who made two trips up the ladder to the stewards stand when claims of foul were made against him during the afternoon took the long climb for the third on his own to make a claim of foul against the winning Gourmet after the sixth race but it was disallowed Adams was aboard Eual G Wyatts Knightfors who fin ¬ ished two lengths away from the winning Pot au Feu gelding after Gourmet had over ¬ hauled the pacesetting Connie Ann on the turn to take the lead and account for his second straight victory at the meeting while turning the distance in 154
