JOHN D JACKSON LUNCHEON SPEAKER AT KIWANIS CLUB Reviews History of Racing in Chicago and Work of Tracks TracksWhat What horse racing means to Chicago in outoftown visitors money spent in the community taxes paid and jobs for thousands was told at todays luncheon of the Kiwanis Club of Chicago by John D Jackson general manager of the Arlington Park and Washington Park Jockey Clubs ClubsMr Mr Jackson who was the principal speaker on a program arranged by the sports committee of the club reviewed the history of racing in Chicago citing the organization of the Washington Park Jockey Club in 1884 with Gen Philip Sheri ¬ dan as president and such outstanding Chi cagoans as Samuel W Allerton Nathaniel K Fairbank Albert S Gage Charles D Hamill W F Blair Potter Palmer Martin A Ryerson and George H Wheeler on its board of directors directorsMr Mr Jackson detailed the work of the racing organizations in promoting Chicago as a summer resort and explained the im ¬ portance to Chicago business of the racing establishments He pointed out that most of the 1000000 distributed to the horse ¬ men in prize money at the two tracks finds its way back into circulation in the 300000 feed bills and the maintenance of the thousand men who care for the 1400 horses quartered here during the summer summerHe He revealed that Illinois racing tracks paid more than 600000 to the state in license fees and admission taxes in 1940 and estimated the states total revenue from racing in 1941 including the two per cent tax on money wagered provided in the new racing law would exceed 2000000
