CANIA DRIVES TO FORE IN OPENER AT DETROIT DETROITVeteran Veteran Daughter of Bull Dog Comes From Far Back at Head of Stretch to Overtake Drawout DrawoutDETROIT DETROIT Mich June 12 Cania eight yearold daughter of Bull Dog and Pot au Sucre sporting the silks of R G Whitting ton raced to a driving length and a half vic ¬ tory in the first race at Detroit Fair Grounds today F Thompsons Drawout fin ¬ ished second in the sixfurlong sprint and was a neck before Robert Grundys favored Double Whisk at the close closeTen Ten went to the post for the initial offer ¬ ing and starter Bryan Steele sent the field off to a good start after a halfminute delay Flaming Youth had good speed away from the stalls and quickly opened up a length and onehalf advantage over Rockwick The latter was a length to the good of Drawout passing the first quarter post Cania the ultimate winner was seventh at this stage and Patterson Milligan who had the mount on her allowed his charge to work her way up steadily steadilyApproaching Approaching the final turn Flaming Youth was still in front by a head margin while Rockwick moved up to offer a stiff challenge Thumb was a well placed third and Drawout was next When the field straightened out for the final drive Rock ¬ wick got to the front and Flaming Youth dropped back beaten Cania which had been taken to the extreme outside then came with fine speed and a furlong from the wire appeared the victor Drawout made one more good bid but the Whittington mare had something left and the best he could do was second a neck before the fast closing Double Whisk WhiskCania Cania stepped the distance over the heavy track in 114 and paid 740 in the straight wageringHEAVY wagering HEAVY RAINFALL RAINFALLA A heavy rain which visited Detroit and vicinity early this morning converted the racing strip into a decidedly off course The sun broke through occasionally how ¬ ever during the evening and aided by a brisk wind dried out the track somewhat The return of warmer weather was respon ¬ sible for attracting another fine crowd for the eightrace card offered Several closely contested events added much to the active atmosphere which prevailed throughout the matinee matineeThe The Highland Park Purse featured sixth race on the program drew seven good sprint ¬ ers and they matched strides at six fur ¬ longs Darby Dan Farms Darby Dean and Beezley Cohns Jim Pat came in for good support in the headliner E R Plunketts Fetchet Dan Lehans Miss Bonnie T D Buhls Aaron Burr Charles Leists Hup HupContinued Continued on fourth page CAM WINS DETROIT OPENER WITH GREAT STRETCH DRIVE DRIVEComes Comes From Fifth Place at Head of Stretch to Overtake Drawout DrawoutContinued Continued from first page pageNancy Nancy and J F Ladleys High Plaid com ¬ pleted the field fieldSupporting Supporting the top attraction was the fourth race the Irish Lad Purse which engaged seven of the better twoyearolds quartered at the local oval Ferguson Herndons Jola S and J Houstons The Dancer Mrs L Frys Bebeja Mrs I H Parkes Try Fin River Divide Farms Char lamar Smith G Baker Srs Chance Ann and Edgar Zantkers Peckenvood went postward for the four and onehalf furlongs dash dashTen Ten Blow from the Mrs C F Taylor sta ¬ ble earned a driving two and onehalf lengths decision in the second race of six furlongs which engaged nine ordinary platers The betting choice Vote Boy fin ¬ ished second and was a length and onehalf before Hechal at the final marker George King had the mount on the winner and had his charge well placed from the start Vote Boy set the pace until the final eighth and Ten Blow made his victorous challenge after being straightened for the stretch run King drove Ten Blow up sharply on the outside and the combination went to the front a sixteenth from the wire wireVote Vote Boy held on well for second and easily withstood Hechals closing challenge Ten Blow paid 540 to earn his second purse of the year and completed the Daily Dou ¬ ble which was worth 2220
