JACK F MACKENZIE REFLECTIONS By CHALLENGER Film Patrol to Be Much Improved Picture Device Protects Riders HOLLYWOOD Calif June 12 The writer has had an opportunity to study the film patrol at close range in the past few days This new device as you probably know is a camera used by eight patrol judges taking pictures of a race in sections and when pieced together tells the com ¬ plete story from the start to the finish It is still in the experimental stage with us general managed Mackenzie stated but we have already seen where improvements can be made The patrol judges are high in their praise One said to us It has a great effect on the jockeys They know a picture is being taken and that any infraction can be detected On the other Tiand the camera protects the riders for if a boy is unjustly accused the picture will tell the full story It is doubtful if the machine can ever be improved to the point where it will develop a picture for use immediately after a race It has its good points how ¬ ever and only time will tell whether its use will be adonted bv other tracks Hollywood Park bows to no other race track in beauty and appointments The management has assumed a pay ¬ roll of 60000 over last year They are refreshingly honest at this beautiful Hollywood race course The word hokum is foreign to the policy of general manager Jack Mackenzie You ask a direct question and get a frank answer He opens the books to show you that 17000 was the daily average attendance last year as against 19000 this year Last year at this time the handle was 495000 This year it is 619000 The increase is well deserved for the Hollywood management has striven to better the sport by catering to the public and also giving that pub ¬ lic the kind of treatment which says Come again With the popularity of the sport on the upgrade it is still the desire of the Hollywood officials to keep the sport on the highest possible plane That they are doing so is re ¬ flected at the present meeting When July rolls around with its Hollywood Derby and Gold Cup there is no telling how many spectators will result Hollywood Parks feature event Satur Average of 19000 at Hollywood Sequoia Cap Tomorrows Feature day will be the 10000 Sequoia Handicap General Manager of Hollywood Park for fillies and mares at seven furlongs This is the first of two events designed for forthe the gentler sex exclusively the other being the 10000 Vanity Handicap to be run on June 28 These races Jack Mackenzie states are our contribution to the oftheard plea for more opportunities for fillies and mares Whenever we feel a movement has merit we try to do our share Right now they are featuring distance events and we have fallen in line with the general idea On Saturday June 21 Hollywood will stage the 10000 Inglewood Handicap a race certain to attract Sweepida and other can ¬ didates for the 75000 added Hollywood Gold Cup Sweepida one of the most popular of California horses won the Golden State Breeders Handicap last Saturday and is now regarded as the hope of California against invaders which have designs on the rich Gold Cup CupIf If for no other reason give Agua Caliente credit for its innovations This weekend they stage racing Sundays only they will run the Gray Horse Handi ¬ cap a race exclusively for gray horses Regardless of how gray horses impress us generally it remains there is plenty of color in a race such as this Gray horses are like olives either you like them or you dont More than one blast has been made against gray horses as racers It has been argued they dont make good But we have seen more than one make the grade and especially so in recent years There is no denying the fact that one of the fastest horses The Tetrarch sent many gray horses to the post and more important many winners In some quarters they have endeavored to discount gray horses But the old adage still holds true and that is that the good horses come in all sizes shapes and colors Fourteen are slated to start in the unusual event at the Mexican course courseIn In Salford II Ralph Strassburger appears to have brought a most useful horse to the country The French gelding has won all but three starts since arrivel here and in his latest effort showed his class by defeating such a performer as Cant Wait He is by Bishops Rock which won stakes for Strassburger in France and is by Teddy out of the Gay Crusader mare Pugnacity Salford II is just one of the many French horses now in this country However French horses are not nearly as common as the English breds which are becoming so noticeable on our racing programs
