FIVE WEEKS OF IMPORTANT RACING AT SUFFOLK DOWNS DOWNSEight Eight Rich Stakes on Schedule Following Saturdays Fixture FixtureBOSTON BOSTON Mass June 12 The halfway mark of the Suffolk Downs springand sum ¬ mer meeting will be reached on Saturday and it also finds the sixth of a fourteen stake schedule written into local racing his ¬ tory Eight handicaps remain on the card with the Bunker Hill Handicap next Tues ¬ day and the Constitution Handicap June 28 the only events programmed under a 5000 value All other stakes range in value from 7500 to 50000 proving a truly golden five weeks for stables on the Boston Grounds GroundsA A decade back the Agua Caliente race track widely advertised the Golden festival as all important stakes seemed to be step ¬ ping on the heels of the one ahead The same may be said of the coming five weeks at Suffolk Downs as particularly during the month of July in the space of nineteen days the sum of 107500 will be dispersed in added money giving the Eastern Horse Association course a place at the head of the class among tracks of the nation during the period periodCOMING COMING FIXTURES FIXTURESThe The Yankee Handicap for threeyearolds will have a 25000 renewal on Juljr 4 the following day twoyearolds will go postward in the 7500 Miles Standish Stakes the Hannah Dustin Handicap fashioned for fil ¬ lies and mares has a 10000 value on July 12 with ihe 50000 Massachusetts Handicap on Wednesday July 16 The curtain rings down three days later on the Mayflower Stakes another juvenile classic for a 15000 purse A of these purses with the excep ¬ tion of the Massachusetts has been raised over last year The Yankee has been tilted 10000 the Miles Standish 2500 the Han ¬ nah Dustin 5000 and the Mayflower an ¬ other 5000 5000It It is rather surprising to find all the 5000 added handicaps at the start of the meet ¬ ing but apparently racing secretary Charles McLennan decided that the form of stake runners would be better later in the season with a fair to middling chance of seeing them in action at Suffolk Downs for larger purses The Massachusetts Handicap date also has been set back a week over last sea ¬ son This year it will have its running on the final Wednesday of the meeting three days before the closing In 1940 it was run ten days in advance of the windup Certainly the stake distribution of better than 100000 is a record high for the Boston area in such a short space of time
