: : : ; Detroit Offers Excellent Program For Inaugural of Long Meeting Boots and Saddle Handicap To Be Run in Two Divisions Because of Twenty Entries DETROIT, Mich., May 22. Perhaps the greatest season in the history of the Detroit Racing Association will get under way at the popular Fair Grounds track here tomorrow. The 73-day meeting, which will conclude on August 15, will be one of the longest since the present Motor City organizations inception. The success of he sport .here during 1941 and previous years has made the local oval one of the best supported in the Middle West and the 1942 sesison undoubtedly will prove a banner one. More handicap horses are now quartered at the Detroit track than any time during the past decade and the response from owners and trainers for the opening-day card was excellent. Because of the fact that 20 horses were named overnight to compete in the ,000 Boots and Saddle Handicap, at six furlongs, track officials instructed racing secretary Charles F. Henry to split the event and two divisions of the feature will be run, each carrying the original purse value. Nine Races on Program The headliners will be decided as the sixth and seventh events on the nine-race program, and each division will probably have 10 starters. In the former, Mrs. Edward McCuans Wise Moss, a consistent winner, here last year and one of the best of her sex in New England this spring, will carry 112 pounds. Top weight impost of 116 pounds is assigned to Wexler and Sha-grins Red Dock, who came to the local course from Miami. Red Dock suffered a fall in his last effort at Tropical Park, but he came out of the mishap without injury and has trained well for his local engagement. Others scheduled to go postward in the first division of top attraction are Robert Needhams locally-owned Cerberus, winner of his last three starts at Churchill Downs; J. A. Kinard, Jr.s, Appointee, Beezely and Cohns fleet South American-bred Sam-borombon, Mrs. Joseph Burnsteins Ship Biscuit, Smart and Bakers Last Gold, Harry C. Richards Exploded, Joseph W. Browns T. M. Dorsett and C. E. Grahams Bosley. Won Paumonok Handicap The second division df the Boots and Saddle will engage another stellar band of thoroughbreds. The post of honor for the sprint falls to the Lexbrook Stables Po-tranco, who will get in under 118 pounds. The Lexbrook colorbearer scored a driving victory in the third running of the Paumonok Handicap at Jamaica on April 9, turning back 13 of the fastest sprinters in the nation. Previous to that effort, Potranco established a new track record for six furlongs fo 1:10 in the Eastman Handicap at Oaklawn Park on March 14. Potranco will have to be at his best here tomorrow to keep up his winning stride, as he will meet worthy competition in M. Wexlers Boy Angler, Beezley and Cohns French-bred Grasshopper II., holder of the worlds record for a mile and forty yards, and Coward and Dupuys Exemplify. Rounding out the field will be T. D. Secretary Henry has arranged a well balanced supporting card and the ,000 Inaugural Handicap, a test of one mile and seventy yards, drew the entries of seven good routers. Coward and Dupuy wil lbe rep-, resented in the race by Marriage, recent winner of the 5,000 Grey Lag Handicap at Jamaica, and Hypocrite. Marriage is top weight with 118 poundc and Hypocrite will pack 112 pounds. Others in the field are A. Wellmans Devalue, R. G. Whitting-tons Three Clovers, Smith G. Baker, Sr.s Meggy, Tall Trees Stables Ball Player and Mrs. J. F. Hihes Gold Teddy. 1 The ,500 Bugle Call Purse, an allowance event for two-year-olds at four and a half furlongs, also should provide keen sport. Twelve juveniles were named to start and included in the probable field are the Brown Hotel Stables Trustee, victor in the Debutante Stakes at Churchill Downs; George Krehbiels speedy colt, Golden Man also a winner at the Derby track; Icy Run. Prince Puck, Burning Sands and O. K. Joe. among others. Post time for the first race at the Fair Grounds tomorrow will be 2:15 p. m.t eastern war time, and the Daily Double will operate as usual on the first and second events.
