Technician in Initial Win of Year at Crete Veteran Woolford Racer Leads Cadmium Home in Feature Race CRETE, 111., May 22. The six-year-old Technician, flying the colors of Herbert M. Woolfs Woolford Farm, raced to his first success in a year, when he led home six other three-year-olds and older horses in the Del Prado Hotel Purse, the seven-furlong feature of todays sport at Lincoln Fields. The son of Insco, who in 1939 was one of the countrys better three-year-old prospects when he won the Flamingo Stakes, made his own pace today and won by slightly more than a length from the Shady Brook Farms Cadmium, who ruled a favorite over the Woolford campaigner. Meanwhile, a long winning streak came to an end for P. L. Kelleys Miss Militant, who finished third after having won six straight engagements. The Kelley color-bearer gave a creditable account of herself, nevertheless, for she is only a three-year-old and was toiling under 109 pounds to 115 for Technician and 113 for Cadmium, to both of whom she was giving much weight on the scale. Fourth to complete the distance was Wm. B. Simpsons Weigh Anchor, who is hitting the comeback trail after having been inactive for almost two years. Technician, ridden by Ovie Scurlock, was closely attended for three-eighths by Wishing and, when the latter gave up, the Woolford horse drew into a good lead. Miss Militant took up the chase after Wishing gave way and held second position to a Coiitinued on Page Forty Technician in Initial Win of Year at Crete Continued from Page One point inside the last sixteenth, where Cadmium moved past her to become the runner-up. Cadmium, as usual, was a distant trailer over the early furlongs but he closed with a powerful rush to beat the Kelley filly by two lengths. Weigh Anchor turned in a steady enough performance and was much the best of the rest of the field. Todays program was witnessed by the largest crowd of the week to suggest that tomorrows half-holiday turnout will be a tremendous one. Mrs. John Marschs Burgoolette and Mrs. Leslie Thompsons Bayridge were winners of the principal supporting attractions this afternoon. Burgoolette defeated five other two-year-olds in the five-furlong Balmoral Purse, fourth race on the card, and Bayridge turned back a field of three-year-olds over six furlongs in the Ivanhoe Purse, the fifth event.
