CRETE, 111., May 22. Seventeen sprinters, a considerably larger field than was originally expected, are scheduled to take part in the ,000 added Crete Handicap, which tops the Lincoln Fields Jockey Clubs first Saturday program of the season tomorrow. The race is to be contested at six furlongs and it will top the best program yet offered here this spring. Some of the outstanding members of the field are Woolford Farms Signator and Pig Tails, the Arcturus Stables Smacked, Norman W. Churchs Defense; Mrs. G. B. Scal-lons Crossbow JX, John Marshs Bulldinger, Mrs. G. H. Emicks Last Call, Mrs. Thelma Otts Shut Eye and Jean Putnams Polymelior. Signator Training Well The Woolf stable will have a particularly strong hand with both Signator and Pig Tails to represent it. Pig Tails, a three-year-old filly, gave local racing fans some evidence of her fleetness of foot on opening day last Monday when she whipped a representative field in the Grand Crossing Handicap. A duplication of that performance might make her hard to beat tomorrow. As for Signator, he has not been to the post since the Florida season, but he has been training well and would only have to run back to some of his races last winter to making his presence felt. It is probable that the honor of going postward the favorite tomorrow will rest Continued on Page Thirty-Six Seventeen Speedsters Meet in Crete Handicap Woolford Entry and Smacked Early Choices for Feature Continued from Page One between the Woolf entry and Smacked. The latter, who will shoulder top weight of 116 pounds, also has much to recommend him as a sprinter and since he also has been training commendably is certain to have many admirers for tomorrows stake. .Bulldinger and Defense are two others for whom there should be solid support. Bulldinger ran second to Heartman in the Jackson Park Purse here Thursday afternoon, at one time showing the way by as many as four lengths. Defense has not yet been seen under colors here, but his California form last year, when he was a two-year-old, and some splendid private trials since his arrival here, speak well for his chances in the Crete Handicap. Crossbow H. is an interesting entry, in that he will be trying for his second victory in the Crete Handicap. He won the race in 1938, when he was a five-year-old, but he still has plenty of run in his aging legs and his connections believe he has better than an outside chance of whipping his younger contemporaries. Among others scheduled to take part in tomorrows headliner are Pumpgun, Hour y Al, Step By, First of All, Putitthere and Tomochichi. Fans also will find that the other races on tomorrows program offer variety and will bring together well-matched fields. There are eight races on the card, as usual, and post time for the first is 2:15 p. m. In view of the lively interest fans have taken in the first days of the Lincoln Fields meeting, this popular South Side track tomorrow may attract a throng in excess of 20,000.
