Nelson Dunstan REFLECTIONS Bv Nelson Dunstan Pimlico Truly Street Car Track Empire City Should Consider Fans Don Cameron Suffers No Jitters Nothing Freakish About The Count 9 BALTIMORE Md May 4 4Vincentive Vincentive qualified handsomely for the Preakness when he won on Monday No more than five will oppose Count Fleet on Saturday Fred B Koontz the Oklahoma breeder left Pimlico for a 10day stay at Military Stock Farm in Lexing ¬ ton Ky Askmenow and Good Morning will stage a speed duel in the Pimlico Oaks tomorrow Many of the horses now at Pimlico will be shipped to Charles Town Harry Buck will not publish his valuable little red book Horses In Training this year Harry Parr HI is gratified with Pimlicos spring showing Fearing the coat strike might tie up the railroads Don Cameron hustled Count Fleet out of Louisville Porter Roberts is leading the Pimlico jockeys No definite arrange ¬ ments have been made for the yearling sales Bud Stotler will race a string at Charles Town Many racing commissioners are arranging to attend the annual convention of their association in New York on Monday and Tuesday Paul Keiper will ride E K Brysons Elray in the Pimlico Nursery on Friday The Grey Lag closing stake at Jamaica looms as the best handicap event of the season to date Dave Woods is back at his desk after a siege of grippe Mr and Mrs John Hertz will arrive in Baltimore tomorrow Mutuel manager John Hay is a patient at a Charles Town hos ¬ pital Humphrey Finney will return to his Coast Guard duties after the running of the Preakness PreaknessIt It is something of a novelty to board a Baltimore street car and see so many racing fans riding xne jrimuco parking area is not closed to holders of A stickers and yet with it all Baltimore fans lack the transportation facilities accorded New Yorkers even though the metro ¬ politan parking areas are closed tight The Long Island Railroad Is giving fans such splendid service that there is little reason to use a car Instead of removing the incentive to drive the Empire City officials are determined to stage their meeting at Yonkers One of the most popular courses in the East they point out that many of their patrons are from Westchester and Con ¬ necticut But it remains that the vast majority who patronize their course are residents of New York City So in catering to the lesser group they are going to force the majority to use cars or walk from Mt Vernon Dunwoodie or the subway Why not face the facts Bus transportation faces the same fate it experienced on Long Island What will happen on a hot July day when a thunderstorm breaks over Yonkers and the majority of people are caught with no means but to walk in getting to the train or the subway We are probably going to be called some fancy names for this paragraph but even so if the Empire City officials want to play fair with the public that supports their track they will transfer their meeting to Long Island IslandDon Don Cameron is no jitters trainer but when Count Fleet was long overdue at Pimlico on Monday a fellow kindly offered to drive him to the Mt Washington station and the Derby winners trainer said Come on we will go down and see whats wrong We met the truck carrying Blue Swords and Cameron yelled to the Simmons trainer Everything all right Walter and Kelley hollered back Every ¬ things jake but this time Blue Swords is in front Your van is about a mile behind us Cameron laughed then hollered back Make the most of it for you will be behind us on Saturday Although they have rival horses the two trainers are good friends and have adjoining stalls Askmenow has a stall in this barn one wag said loud enough for Cameron to hear and the Hertz trainer grinned as he answered Fleet was a gentleman when he refused to pass her in the Futurity last yea but with no fillies in the Preakness Askmenow is the least of my worries Just then the photographers started taking shots of Blue Swords looking out of his stall Famed for his fondness for tobacco Kelley held out a carrot and a cigar and the way that Blue Larkspur colt grabbed the carrot shows he likes his vegetables more than tobacco He took a bite enough to ruin the cigar but did not eat it itBoth Both Count Fleet and Blue Swords were heavily bandaged when taken off the vans The Fleet also has a leather protector to prevent a head injury It will take about four weeks for his injury to heal properly Cameron said and the main thine is to ward off any infection That sulfa remedy is a great thing Cameron may start the Hertz colt in the 15000 Withers on May 22 as that event will be two weeks before the running of the Belmont Stakes on June 5 It is a feat of training to prep a horse for a mile and three sixteenths of the Preakness drop him down to the one mile of the Withers and then tighten himTfor the one and onehalf miles of the Belmont Stakes The time element is a consideration for these three races are run in less than a months span Sir Barton is the only one to win the Triple Crown and the Withers A horse must take on speedsters in the Withers and stayers in the Belmont On his record to date Count Fleet can hold his own either way for while his Derby time was comparatively slow he can flash a keen brand of speed when the occasion demands it Cameron has every faith in his Derby winner so do not be surprised if he sends The Fleet out for the 15000 Withers that is passed up by most trainers when pointing a horse for the Belmont Stakes The current stories that Count Fleet is a freak horse are ridiculous He is no such beauty as Purchase or Eight Thirty nor again has he a head or other parts to draw admiring outbursts from onlookers There is nothing to distinguish him from other horses that is until he starts to run In action he is something to watch and we can see nothing freakish in the fact that he holds his head high while running Man o War did the same thing and if that is freakish the American turf can stand a lot more freaks on their order The talk of his chances against such an older star as Whirlaway continues to grow As a rule such talk eventually leads to a match race and such an occurrence could come about in the fall For the time being however The Fleet has a busy campaign in his own division After the Belmont Cameron will be looking to the Classic American Derby and other rich events and before he gets through with those it is doubtful if many will be looking upon his charge as a freak Cameron does not talk much about his champion but then what can he say beyond that the horse has done everything asked of him A horse like that speaks for himself
