I ! . i . t f : , i I i : Centennial of Chicago Racing to Be Observed Gold Medals Will Be Presented At Arlington-Washington Meets In commemoration of the hundredth year of racing in Chicago, which will be observed during this, the 1944 season, appropriate centennial ceremonies are being planned during the 70 -day Arlington-Washington Park season, which will be staged at the Homewood course again this year. Centennial gold medals are to be pre-l sented winning owners, trainers and jockeys in all 24 of the outstanding stakes that will be run during the coordinated meeting from June 19 through September 7. There also will be 20 beautifully designed gold and silver cups for the major stakes. Included will be Col. C. V. Whitneys Equi-! poise Mile challenge cup and six gold cups for the successful breeders in the Arlington-Washington early closing fixtures. They will be suitably inscribed to mark a century of racing progress in Chicago. John L. Hervey, Chicagos internationally known thoroughbred authority, Salvator," lias gathered the authentic and hitherto unknown records which show that the first duly organized race meeting was held within the present city limits in 1844. The information will be set forth in his book on early American racing, which will be published next month by The Jockey Club. Arlington-Washington Parks attractions for the racing centennial year are the richest for one track in the history of the sport.
