Twenty-Two Twenty-Two Vie Vie in in Steger Steger Handicap; Handicap; Inaugurate Inaugurate 49-Day 49-Day Meeting Meeting at at Detroit Detroit Sprint and Route | Handicaps Carded Air Sailor Tops Boots and Saddle, While Tulachmore Is Man o War Topweight FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., May 24. — The Detroit Racing Association will inaugurate a 49-day spring and summer meeting tomorrow at its spacious plant on Woodward Avenue. Never in the local courses history have prospects been quite so bright, and general manager George W. Lewis and his associates are satisfied that the 1946 season is destined to be the best since the Wolverine State legalized the thoroughbred sport. Two outstanding attractions are listed for decision on the opening day program, the 0,000 Boots and Saddle Handicap at six furlongs for three-year-olds and upward and the ,000 Man o War Handicap, a one-mile and one-sixteenth test for horses of similar age. The Boots and Saddle attracted an even dozen top flight performers, while the Man o War is to match a like number classed as better-than-aver-age routers. Buhl Racer Carries 120 Theeodore D. Buhls locally owned Air Sailor, crack four-year-old son of Sweep Like and Miss Morocco, is to make his first appearance of the year in the Boots and Saddle. Winner of 8,200 during his 1945 campaign, Air Sailor is one of the quickest horses quartered at the Fair Grounds, and he has been assigned topweight of 120 pounds for the Inaugural Day co-feature. Next in the estimation of racing secretary Charles F. Henry are Albert Wellmans Many Lands and Mrs. George C. Whites Diamond Dick, and each of these Boots and Saddle eligibles are to shoulder 115 pounds. Rounding out the field for the Boots and Saddle are Kurkjian and Dilgers John Q Public, 114; H. Josepharts Increscent, a recent invader from Florida, 110; O. F. Woodwards Sir Sprite, 114; Mrs. James L. Chesneys hard-hitting Play Hands, 107; A. F. Walls Tiger Man, 114; Jimmie, a representative of Mrs. Roy Carruthers, assigned 113; Mrs. Earl H. Beezleys Builder, 104; W. L. Huntleys Dmpydan, 106, and Son Forever, 109. W. E. McDonalds Tulachmore heads the Man o War under 115 and may prove the horse to beat tomorrow. Others named are Darby Dimout, Unconditional, Galaprox, San Yet, Miss Fluff, Top Reward, Plover Brand, Wise Paisano, Boy-Plin and Sweep Swinger.
