Twenty-Two Twenty-Two Vie Vie in in Steger Steger Handicap; Handicap; Inaugurate Inaugurate 49-Day 49-Day Meeting Meeting at at Detroit Detroit Bull Play Assured Support in Sprint Fighting Don, Parasang and Historian Keen Contenders For Lincoln Fields Fixture HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., May 24.— Although the current Lincoln Fields meeting continues to battle poor tracks and off-color weather, it seems that the hardy turfites are undaunted as they pour into this spacious plant in droves, and the horsemen, strangely, are presenting no troublesome problems to racing secretary Larry Bogenschutz as they willingly fill the daily programs. The latter was exemplified glaringly this morning when no less than 22 of the fastest sprinters in this part of the country were named overnight for the 0,000 added Steger Handicap, six and one-half furlong dash that will hold down top billing tomorrow. Because of the heavy entry list, local officials were to go into a huddle late this afternoon to decide what action is to be taken in the event there are not enough declarations to bring the field down to 14, the number of stalls in the Bahr starting gate being used here. There is no auxiliary gate available, but it is possible to start several horses from outside the stalls. That, however, will be entirely up to the racing board to decide. The chances are better than even that the event will be split into a pair of 0,000 heats. Top Sprinters Named With the possible exception of Errard, winner of the Crete Handicap here on opening day, who has been taken out of training because of a lame condition, the very best sprinters in the Middle-West will vie for the stakes. Because of his impressive second to Errard in the Crete, plus a post position on the outside where he will have a good opportunity to escape interference in the big field, W. W. Jones Bull Play may be most popular with visiting experts. The brown four-year-old son of Bull Lea — Day Play has proven in previous starts that he can handle any type of footing and he appears to be well rigged in the weights assignments with 115 pounds. Historian, from the Woolford Farm, is another who showed up well in the Crete and who has won seven of his last 11 starts. He came from far back in the Crete and was running like a wild horse near to the finish. The 11 races noted reveal that he was unbeaten during that period when the track was other than fast. His young trainer, Eddie Anspach, has given him a special prep for this dash and says he is up to his finest possible race. Fighting Don, owned by Miss G.
