BETWEEN RACES By Oscar Otis i iFilm Film Winners Circle1 Proves Hit Luke Sneed Consignors to Sales Offer Yearlings by With Regards Okey Smokey LifeSaver for Sire SireHOLLYWOOD HOLLYWOOD PARK Inglewood Calif June 14 This department cannot recom ¬ mend too highly for the turf fans and others to take a bit of time out at the motion picture theatre and see Richard K Polimers production The Win ¬ ners Circle and which is now either showing or will be shown in your locality The pic ¬ ture is documentary to a degree includes a lib ¬ eral sprinkling of flashbacks to about 20 great races of the past Turf fans will find these interesting tp a great degree The film traces the life of a thoroughbred from the time of his foaling until that day of days when he first reaches the winners circle Some clever farm shots race course scenes and a bit of the background of the turf in general are among the highlights of the picture There are a couple of technical errors in the picture but only the most fastidious of turf pursuits would carp about them A few technical errors at times even add to theme of the film for the folks who just enjoy racing without being backstretch experts The farm shots were all taken at the Northridge Ranch of Ryana Farm Santa Anita was the locale of the race course scenes Among the people you know who play themselves in the film are Robert S Bob Howard jockey Johnny Longden and the Santa Anita starter starterBilly Billy Mills Millstit tit titMessrs Messrs Luke Sneed the Hemet thor ¬ oughbred people are consigning for the first time this summer to the annual sale of the California Breeders Association They are offering their three finest year ¬ lings both on looks and breeding It might be explained that the trio is owned by the partnership and hail from the historic Hemet Stock Farm Sneed also maintains another farm nearby In any event the three to go under the hammer are pro ¬ nounced among the leaders in appearance this year of the entire state All three are by With Regards whose first full crop are now yearlings With Regards of course is well remembered as the winner of the Arkansas Derby Aqueduct Handicap in which he defeated Apache and First Fiddle American Legion Myrtlewood Paumonok etc It was our good fortune to be able to inspect With Regards last Sunday and he is a more prepossessing sire than a race horse albeit his record on the turf is quite sparkling sparklingti ti tiThe The trio in question are a bay colt from Pompeys Squaw by Pompey a bay colt from My Blend she by Blenheim II and a chestnut colt from Bamboula one of the sturdier race mares and producers by North Star HI The writer rather imagines the colts from Pompeys Squaw and Bam ¬ boula will be among the stars of the sale Bamboula was a winner of 15 races in ¬ cluding the Illinois Oaks was second in the Agua Caliente Derby and third in the Latonia Oaks Bamboula is a half sister to the stakes winner Boysy whose earnings were 112670 She also has pro ¬ duced the sensational Holly Tree winner of six of his seven starts in the winter of 1946 at Santa Anita Holly Tree it might be mentioned raced in some mighty sen ¬ sational time that winter The colt from Pompeys Squaw also has considerable in the way of recommendations Pompeys Squaw won at two three four and five and is the dam of Hemet Squaw one of the most popular stakes winning mares in California history and also of the stakes winner Holly Leaves A AHorses Horses and People Not too many months ago Bill Gilmore the San Francisco sports ¬ man and breeder purchased the entire stock of Errol MacBoyles Loma Rica Rancho at Grass Valley He liked the stallion Time Supply and with good rea ¬ son But he wasnt quite sold on the other stud that went with the lot Micro ¬ phone He returned the latter to the farm for cold blood opportunities Then along came Okey Smokey winner of four in a row including one handicap and a stakes and Gilmore hurriedly rushed Microphone back to the good graces of thoroughbred standing Which is added proof if any be needed that nothing suc ¬ ceeds like a winner At last word from Portland Meadows the cafeteria was intact and floating around the infield As much salvage work as is practicable has been started in the clubhouse
