JUDGES STAND 1 By Charles Hatton 1 1Ky Ky Youths Helped Mend American Flyer Arlington Attracts Broqkfield Fillies Equine Bottle Baby Is Stakes Winner Phipps Yearlings Train at Elmendorf ElmendorfAmerican American Flyer scarcely can be categorized among the turfs Big Name Horses but the Sabath veteran is very popular with Chicago racegoers Not many horses come back quite so capable as they were before going wrong but the sevenyearold son of Hairan is bet ¬ ter He has progressed from a 4000 plater in December to allowance company and has won eight of his last nine starts To trainer H C Red Dodson belongs the credit for the skilful way in which American Flyer has been handled To three youths down at Lexington Ky belongs some of the credit for returning him to the races sound for racing purposes American Flyer was fired and turned out for some three months at the B and C Stock Farm of which Ted Can is part owner and manager B and C Stock Farm is not unlike many others in Fayette and adjacent counties in that one of the countless branches of the Elkhorn Creek flows through it The cool limestone spring water of the creek is soothing to horses underpinning and for long hours William Milward Bach who is 12 and his chums Joseph Martin 16 and Ted Carr Jr 14 took turns standing American Flyer in the stream The old horse responded to this treatment and has returned to the races to become a sort of Hindoo of the platers with a larger follow ¬ ing than most stakes winners American Flyer no longer is just a name on a sled to the youth of Chitlin Switch SwitchArlingtons Arlingtons generous stakes program will attract many of the strings now active on the East and West Coasts Ben Lindheimer was among the first to card a lot of filly andmare races and they are the objectives of the Easts clever Itsabet belonging to Harry Isaacs Brookfield Stable Itsabet has won the Prioress and Colonial in the East this spring and will be a welcome addition to the Chicago fillies Isaacs was afforded a great deal of pleas ¬ ure at Garden State Park recently when the filly Ima comin of whom he is the owner and breeder captured the 10000 Rancocas Stakes Imacomin is by Hcliopolis out of a Halcyon mare called Missmahoot that Isaacs bought at the 45 Fall Sales for 6200 6200The The Keeneland Stud some years ago reared an orphaned Mahmoud filly called Grey Mood on a bottle A somewhat similar case is that of the contemporary stakes winner Nathaniel who is by Challenger II out of Alexandrine Nathaniel races for the Lazy F Ranch of which Oleg DubassofI is the trainer and has won the Heiser Handicap and Jennings Handicap among other events It seems that when Alexandrine foaled Nathaniel in 1944 she hadnt enough milk to nourish him properly so a Negro groom named Nathaniel Griffin under ¬ took to rear the colt on a bottle The youngster thrived so that Joseph F Flanagan who bred him named the colt for the groom Alexandrine was herself a useful performer winning 16 races in her five campaigns If it interests you she is a grand ¬ daughter of Miss Hanover who is better known to pedigree pundits as the ancestress of Count Fleet Mention of Grey Mood reminds us that Mahmoud already is gaining a reputation as a sire of broodmares abroad although few of his American daugh ¬ ters have anything to race as yet We should think that it might be encouraging to owners of Mahmoud fillies that the Epsom Oaks winner Masaka is out of a Mahmoud mare So ia the French colt Djelal who won the Prix Jacques Le Marois MaroisChicagoans Chicagoans may see Mr Busher who won the colt division of the National Stallion last Saturday at Bel ¬ mont and others of the Maine Chance Farms string in action at Arlington and Washington We suppose you know that Mr Busher is the brother to Busher for whom the cosmetics lady paid a record sum of 50000 when he was a weanling Some of the experts didnt much care for the appearance of his knees as a yearling but trainer Jimmy Smith has brought him along with his usual patience and thoroughness Smith also developed Busher and indeed he sometimes rode her at the head of a set of Idle Hour twoyearolds Ogden Phipps now has Busli ers yearling sister and her baby brother at Cy Whites Elsmeade along with several other yearlings and brood ¬ mares Probably the Phipps youngsters will be trained over the private Elmendorf track and stabled at the elaborate training barn there thereTurfana Turfana Glen Tomlinson reports Misty Isle in foal to Roman and the result will be a sister or brother of Ed Moores brilliant Cosmic Missile The latter has been fired and may come back at Saratoga Tom Piatt is a commuter between LincolnatWashington and his Brookdale Farm Seely is a descendant of the noted filly Kanpy Thoughts Her dam Night Lady won eight races Wendell Cassidy has established a board of trainers to review applicants at Hollywood Park Mrs Al Sabath has bought the mare Thats One a halfsister of Shut Outs dam to mate with Alsab who was Shut Outs rival in many events
