REFLECTIONS By Nelson Dunstan Citation Will Start in Four Chicago Races Arcaro Gives All Credit to Calumet Champ Stone Age Mr Busher Impressive Winners United Hunts Revive Top Amateur Sport SportNEW NEW YORK N Y June 14 14ThieeDot ThieeDot Shorts We are told that the 30 shares in the syndicate which totaled the 500000 purchase price for Alibhai is made UD of some 12 to 15 breeders one of whom is Louis B Mayer who retained a few shares for him ¬ self When the Alibhai list of purchasers is published Walter Chrysler Jr master of North Wales Stud in Virginia will be one of the names on it Herman B Delman owner of the good filly Flower Bed sails for England Wednesday and while on the other side hopes to complete a deal to bring a few English and French horses to this country A new edition of Keene Daingerfields fine book Training for Fun and Profit Maybe will be ready for delivery early in October A catalog of the Coldstream Stud yearlings to be sold at Keeneland has just arrived at our desk and as usual many of the youngsters listed have plenty of appeal to prospective buyers Tattersalls the Kentucky Sales Company will sell 23 French yearlings at their Lexington pad ¬ docks on July 30 the day after the closing of the sales at Keene ¬ land Citation is now the fifth largest moneywinner of the world with 544700 but in his next win will pass Whirlaway and then set sail for Assault who is now third on the list with 626620 626620While While Jimmy Jones was packing to go to Arlington Park near Chicago he was telling us of the plans that he and his dad had in mind for Citation There is a possi ¬ bility Jimmy said of our starting Citation in a race prior to the Dick Welles Stakes at Arlington for provid ¬ ing a horse is not overraced I think it a good thing to keep him going However we will definitely start him in the Dick Welles Stakes on July 21 as a prep for the Arlington Classic which will be run on the 31st Then we will start him in the Drexel Handicap at one mile on August 19 as a tuneup for the American Derby which will be run at Washington Park on August 28 We are naturally not planning beyond that time but there are any amount of races for which he will be eligible in the fall Coaltown will probably remain in Chicago also and his first race there may be the sixfurlong Skokie Handi ¬ cap to be run on July 1 While at the Chicago tracks the Jones boys will put Free America in light training so providing both Citation and Coaltown are not forced to the sidelines for some reason Calumet will have three powerful candidates for the many rich events around the country in autumn days daysOn On Sunday morning even though it was raining a little Eddie Arcaro relaxed by playing 18 holes of golf A modest jockey he was full of praise for Citation and insists the Calumet champion is entitled to all the credit 1 must admit I was a little nervous when we were going to the post he said but once the race was under way I had no fears as to the outcome In the paddock they told me that if I had to do it to use the whip but I did not use it once during the race When Escadru made his move at the head of the stretch I flipped the whip twice but did not touch him with it and he bounded right to the front again There may be horses in other countries that will hold their own with him but I know there is not one horse in this country today who could beat him in a weightforage race He seems to get smarter every time he starts When we re ¬ minded Arcaro that he would have to make quite a few trips to Chicago this year he answered Ill go anywhere to ride that horse Like all men who take pride in their work he is happy to be a twotime winner of the Triple Crown but there again he gives the credit to the two horses Whirlaway and Citation and takes very little for himself himselfAlthough Although Citation was the big horse at Belmont on the weekend the days card also revealed two very im ¬ pressive juveniles in Alfred G Vanderbilts Stone Age and Maine Chance Farms Mr Busher In the first race of the day Stone Age a brown colt by Bahram Petrify by Identify scored handsomely over 16 opponents and rail the four and a half furlongs in 51M which is just one fifth of a second off the track record After his splendid showing in his winning debut on June 5 Mr Busher was a pronounced favorite with the throng for the National Stallion Stakes This full brother to the crack filly Busher not only justified the support given him but after his win by two lengths over William Helis Emulate he left the impression that he was one of the youngsters who will be fighting it out in the more important juvenile events that will come later in the season Both Stone Age and Mr Busher are eligible for the 20000 Tremont which will be run at Aqueduct on July 7 and also the 20000 Great American which at six furlongs will be the feature event at the Long Island track on July 14 Emulate the Rounders colt is also an eligible for these events along with his stablemate Ennobled EnnobledWhen When the twoday United Hunts meeting gets under way at Belmont Park tomorrow afternoon the official season for ama ¬ teur racing between the flags will be concluded There has been a grand revival of amateur sport this season and much of the credit must go to the United Hunts of which Lewis Waring is the head This organization has helped to advance the status of all the meetings that are recognized by the National Steeple ¬ chase and Hunt Associations and they are entitled to a world of credit for bringing hurdling and steeplechasing back to the class where it is an interesting sidelight of the flat racing at Pimlico Belmont Delaware Park and Saratoga There will be eight races at Belmont tomorrow including the Cherry Malotte which is a steeplechase handicap at about two miles while the 10000 New York Turf Writers Cup will be the feature event of the day This will be a hurdle handicap at about two miles and the owner of the winner is to receive a challenge cup pre ¬ sented by the New York Turf Writers Association The Wednes ¬ day feature is the 15000 Temple Gwathmey a steeplechase handicap at about two and a half miles which should see some of the best jumpers in training in the post parade
