Darjeeling Gives Eight Rivals Weight In Torn Roby Steeplechase at Delaware D Artagnan Tourist Pride Contenders in Stake Named For Rider Injured in Fall FallDELAWARE DELAWARE PARK Stanton Del June 14 Delaware Park observed the second and final offday of its 30day meeting to ¬ day but the sport will resume tomorrow with the 10000 Tom Roby Steeplechase Handicap first of the associations quartet of liberally endowed jumping fixtures fea ¬ turing an exceptionally good program programInaugurated Inaugurated only last year the Roby is an about two miles contest for fouryear olds and upward which have never won a sweepstakes hurdle spring maiden and hunt meetings excepted The race of course is named after the former steeple ¬ chase rider Tom Roby who has been hos ¬ pitalized for a number of years following a spill during a steeplechase race at Belmont Park ParkBayard Bayard Sharp a director of the Dela ¬ ware Steeplechase and Race Association and an ardent steeplechase enthusiast has presented a cup to be added to the Tom Roby Steeplechase Stakes The jockey rid ¬ ing the winner of the race will enjoy pos ¬ session of the Cup for one year or until the next running of the Stake StakeFortynine Fortynine nominations were received for this years renewal of the Roby but only nine were named through the entry box as overnight starters There are two couplings in the field Mrs E duPont Weil having named both Zodiac II and Dar ¬ jeeling while Tourist Pride and Phalanger will run as the Bayard Sharp Anthony Bonuomo entry entryThe The field also comprises Henry S Hork heimers Rank A M Hirschs Gona Mont peliers Sea Defense Miss Dolly von Stades DArtagnan and C M Klines Half Hour HourDarjeeling Darjeeling who has proven to be equally adept on the flat or over the jumps shapes up the Roby favorite although he will be topweighted under 157 pounds Trained by the clever Jim Ryan Darjeeling came a cropper in his last start at Belmont Park but was a winner over Pimlicos rugged steeplechase course during the spring meeting at the Baltimore track The vet ¬ eran saddlesmith Jack Magee has been assigned as Darjeelings rider riderZodiac Zodiac II is strictly an unknown quan ¬ tity since the sevenyearold gelding hasnt been postward since performing during this meeting a year ago He is still a maiden in both steeplechase and flat rac ¬ ing competition competitionDArtagnan DArtagnan is a wellseasoned competitor having performed during the jumping sea ¬ son at Belmont Park The rangy gelding is a member of the public stable trained by the capable Dolly Byers who is a tophand with steeplechase runners runnersTourist Tourist Pride won on the flat during the Pimlico meeting but is primarily a jumper and earns a good figure in the Roby field Others meriting consideration are Half Hour and Sea Defense both of whom saw action either at Pimlico or Belmont Park ParkBest Best of the flat racers on tomorrows program is the 4000 Fair Star Purse which has attracted an overnight field of 15 better than average three year olds Under the allowances conditions of the six furlongs dash Grant Thorns Andy Handy Christiana Stables Mark Up and Crispin Oglebays Gates Mills are topweighted under 124 pounds each eachGates Gates Mills was a scratch from last Saturdays Kent Stakes The bay colt had worked well for that one mile and a six ¬ teenth fixture but his connections evidently decided he was pitched a trifle too high He gets a good figure in the Fair Star although the race shapes up as an ex ¬ tremely wideopen affair affairOthers Others in the race are Superb Donna Gain A Foot Touch Control Battle Cry Loriot Certified Obedient Sun Elsie Oriole Blue Holly Dagette and Anna Christie Couplings include Superb Donna and Andy Handy Obedient and Gates Mills and Mark Up and Anna Christie
