ROPLEY improved his position boldly after a half mile, attained a commanding lead rapidly nearing the stretch and held sway to win easily. SMOKE PUFF loomed a threat in the early stretch, but failed to menace the top one. VOLTAIRE, forwardly placed while under restraint early, failed to respond to pressure. PLEITO wrested command from the outside along the backstretch and weakened. REPAND moved with a rush from the five-eighths pole, but flattened out in the final test. COMMODORE K. was not rushed while well placedearly and dropped back steadily. SOBRE TODOS faltered badly. DOUBLE BRANDY was slow settling into stride and lacked a menacing rally when put to a drive. VITAL SUN assumed the early lead while under restraint, then flattened out when challenged.
