SAM HILDRETHS CUNNING. Oakland. Cal., January 3. — Some horsemen at Oakland claim that one reason moving S. C. Hildreth 10 take his horses to Santa Anita Park, was that lie thought he could steal a march on the Oakland owners with horses entered in the Burns Handicap, in that his horses would be trained to the hour under favorable conditions, while the Oakland horses would be imperfectly prepared for the big race, owing to the poor track conditions which prevailed at Emeryville when Hildreth left, and which are likely to continue all winter. Ed Trotter, before the Tanforan track was opened to horsemen, was seriously thinking of following Hildreth south with Peter Sterling, but has decided to remain here and prepare his Lord Esterling horse on the Tanforan track, which Is a good training track under the worst weather conditions.
